Holy smokes that's a big a$$ blacktail! bigger than the Mulie I shot last year. I've only shot 5 blacktails so far but I'm afraid none of them are even close to that stature. I would love to see if anybody else has had one that size, hope you find your pics too.

what about those hybrid mulie/blacktails we hammer up your way, those count
at all. Them guys we get on early season alpine hunts have to push the scales at 350 or more on the hoof!
Nice heavy bodies, compact but narley racks, can't be scored blacktails though, over the boundry area.
Ever look for those guys towards Lillooet?

I know there are going to be many bigger than this but it is my biggest bodied Island BT to date. The one one the left isn`t as small as it looks it was a fairly average young 2 point for around here. I don`t have a scale so I don`t know what it weighed in at.

I actually try and stay close to Squam as possible...LOVE the blacktails over muley's myself...feel the cross breed flavour just isnt 'right' , lolol:razz:

I do , however. think the only place to get a true pure bred is on the island.
This buck was from the valley here in Pemby..right at the bottom on the west side of the river...he's probably got some 'blood' in him , but he freaked the shit outta me the first time I saw him!!...we weighed him on Gilmore's digital potato scale....also , dont anyone think they need to compare to this 'thing' to post...love em all , lets see em!!
I gotta take a pic of a pic to put him on here..few minutes..8)

I gues the only "true" blacktails are on Vancouver Island, and I bet some would get bigger if there werent' so may wolves!

But I always wonder about the arbitrary Boone and Crockett "line" especailaly after learning that mule deer came form blacktail and whitetail cross breeding..So the idea of "hybrids" is somewhat skewed.

Anyway, her is the biggest blacktail I have killed. We have sen it before.. Tell me it's a "hybrid" all you want, I don't care:biggrin:

That buck of Gates cant get more blacktail features for the mainland.....orange horns , short ears..classic black tail.....

Note , it has been common for mainland bucks to have to have a ' all black tail' as one of the features for the ' book scorers'..but I find the majority of the island bucks have the same colored tail as our bucks here..brown with a black tip....I have only shot a 'few' b tail bucks with a solid black tail...including here on the mainland.as well on the island...wonder what makes the call in their genes for that?

http://i443.photobucket.com/albums/qq155/proguide66/08blacktail040.jpg

this buck came from maybe 2 miles from Gates buck...all black tail...and gates buck was closer to the coast..

http://i443.photobucket.com/albums/qq155/proguide66/bookblacktail002-1.jpg

This blacktail was also well over 200lbs...and a handfull of miles away from gates buck...but only had a black tip , like most island bucks.

As taken from the Boone & Crocket clubs website:

British Columbia — Starting at the Washington-British Columbia border, blacktail deer range runs west of the height of land between the Skagit and the Chilliwack Ranges, intersecting the Fraser River opposite the mouth of Ruby Creek, then west to and up Harrison Lake to and up Tipella Creek to the height of land in Garibaldi Park and northwesterly along this divide past Alta Lake, Mt. Dalgleish and Mt. Waddington, thence north to Bella Coola. From Bella Coola, the boundary continues north to the head of Dean Channel, Gardner Canal and Douglas Channel to the town of Anyox, then due west to the Alaska-British Columbia border, which is then followed south to open water. This boundary excludes the area west of the Klesilkwa River and the west side of the Lillooet River.

So YJ,
That would fall in the "official boundaries" of mule deer not black tailed, although many pure and benchleg (crossed) deer reside outside of these boundaries, these are the ones scoring standards are judged by.

Gatehouse, here's one to negate your thoughts on the origins of blacktails, I just stole this from another site, but this is what I have been lead to believe in anything I have read about blacktail genetics.

For many years the Columbian Blacktail Deer has been considered a subspecies of the Mule deer, however recent DNA testing has proven this not to be the case. In Valerius Geist's informative book Mule Deer Country he explains that by testing the mitochondrial DNA (the mothers DNA ) of the three species (blacktail, whitetail and mule deer), researchers have now determined that it was the mating of Whitetail does and Blacktail buck's that gave rise to the Mule deer and not the opposite as was once suspected.

It is now believed that millions of years ago the Whitetail deer expanded its range down the east coast of the United States, across Mexico, and then back up the West coast, where it eventually evolved into the Blacktail Deer. This may help to explain the strong resemblance in appearance and psychological characteristics between the two. Thousands of years later as the recently evolved Blacktail's range spread eastward and the Whitehall's range again expanded westward, the two deer again met. At this point the Blacktail bucks, displaced the Whitetail bucks, and bred the Whitetail does. Researches now believe that it is this hybridization that produced what is now know as the Muledeer.

No Gate, I will not call that a hybrid....I call it a damn awsome blacktail!

Yup, that is what I was referring to...

B&C draws a line, but deer can travel back and forth, so 2km either side it's classed as a blacktail or a mulie. Seems silly:cool:

No different than Canada moose vs Alaska/Yukon Moose, or Canada Moose vs Shiras Moose, or Coues Whitetail vs regular Whitetail, or Mountain Caribou vs Barrenground Caribou, or etc etc.

Gotta draw the line somewhere. Georgia Straight might make more sense for the bt's but I am sure someone argued that the deer on the west coast are bt's etc. So you are left with a gray line, just like the others.

Oh sure, I get that about it...I just think in this day and age with DNA testing and the whole bit that we coudl do better than drawing a line!

Of course, then we'd have to go back and DNA test everything for 100 years ago:wink:

I don't care that much, since I never enter anything in the record book anyway, but it's kinda funny when you see a deer that has ALL blacktail characteristics- such as the one I shot- but it's classed as a mule deer!

The line between spp and sub-spp is pretty blurry even with DNA, but I understand your frustration. Our moose here in the Koots are definitely Shiras (in my humble opine), but classified as Canada moose with the ones from Kawdy.

If I could only score a draw, then I'd really have something to complain about. ;)

You know what else I am lovin about this thread??.....no one seems to be aking about the damned ' tape measure'!!!

To each their own...but the recordbooks and their rules can lick myparts......there isnt a 'part' of any animal that 'doesnt count' in my eyes...or an imaginary line.....er how about lookin at a MONDO buck and the FIRST thing somebody say's is " awe, too badit doesnt have _____ !....blah blah blah...
Keep emcomin.....( that Surry buck is about as ' perfect ' lookin specimen blacktail as you can get !!)...

Thats cause BT hunters know that any buck is an acomplishment:wink:

V.I blacktails from this past year.

This emaciated guy was huge at one point

http://i50.photobucket.com/albums/f314/BlacktailStalker/Nov3008003.jpg

Didnt take up much room in the pack

http://i50.photobucket.com/albums/f314/BlacktailStalker/Picture1439.jpg

This guy was still big considering he was shot Nov.29

http://i50.photobucket.com/albums/f314/BlacktailStalker/Nov2908021.jpg

Heres the fat that was still on him, unusual for a late season buck.
Obvious this guy was not in a rut craze at all (although I shot him while breeding a doe)
I've heard that some bucks will actually avoid hard rutting and just breed with a couple does ? Maybe to preserve body weight/energy for tough winters (which we had)
Makes sense.

I don't care that much, since I never enter anything in the record book anyway, but it's kinda funny when you see a deer that has ALL blacktail characteristics- such as the one I shot- but it's classed as a mule deer!

Gate, could you summarize the characteristics of BT and Muley for us? I've seen enough BT and Muley and usually could tell whether it's a BT or muley at the first look of it. But on the other hand I just have had hard time to decribe the difference between the two except for the size of ears or bodies. Well, I've seen BT with huge ears and bodies two. So....:x sometimes just by looking at the head and the color of hide. But a summary will be great.

Thanks Gate. That was gooding reading and an interesting site. I went to Oregon some time ago to visit a friend of mine who hunts with his family every year. From what I saw over there I agree that BT down there are bigger overall than what we have here. But the article still failed to differentiate BT from muley technically.

Cool pics there Curly T.

Here is one of my largest well over 200.He was bucked in half here just to get him to the road, sure didn't eat well.

Me and a friend got these blacktails last fall. With only one day to hunt November, when the spike walked out someone had to shoot it, and it was a bit of a:
r: "you shoot it"
f: "no you shoot"

so I did, and then the unseen 3 point goes bounding up the hill and buddy got him. Was quite a good size deer in the body...but I don't usually weigh stuff so can't be sure.

Murderer?.....Ya, I have killed a few dinks, but they eat good, and with 3 tags, well you get the picture.

Wouldn't say to much pressure, but that's because Surrey is all private access only for shotgun hunting, heck for any hunting. No because the deer are usually on some piece of private land without hunter pressure they are not to cagey, but extremely nocturnal just because of human presence.
The piece of land I used to hunt rarely See's any deer now(landowner bought a German Shepard), they have moved into a larger property nearby, that no one hunts and for all intents and purposes is just about as hard to get permission as it would be to get a day pass from Alcatraz....just not going to happen.

not too shabby for my first deer ever and a solo hunt on top of that.

So as to not hi jack, here he is Nov.29, check out the fat on him.
This buck has made me a believer that some bucks come down and hardly participate in the rut or not at all. Some guys figure they can sense a hard winter and will reserve fat stores to survive.
Clearly, this guy was not running around f'n and fighting like most.
The fat being pink shows he was using fat stores when I took him but hadnt been for long. If the fat was all white it would have meant he wasnt using any stores at all.

The islands or coastal mainland. You can get some really old sitka BT (different form columbias) bucks that have the tiniest little 3x3 and 4x4 racks on the coastal islands. Big grey faces with these tiny multi point racks its hilarious and they are very fun to hunt.

PG66 is the man i have read everything he has wrote on here and it's bang on, soak up all the info he is saying because that stuff is exactlly the tools you need to find these big deer, we spend all our time hunting big old growth timber and alpine, alot of time not seeing to much of anything, but when you do see something it's usally pretty good, i have the next 4 days off and one more tag to fill so hopefully i'll be putting one more pic up sometime this week

Wow this is an old but awesome thread!

My very first blacktail was my biggest. This one was taken from the Cowichan area in late season on a last minute hunting trip. Have no idea what he weighed, but I was ecstatic. Blacktails are so cool!
