Whoo hoo finally some news on my grizzly rug and I thought I would share to get some of you guys that are going grizzly hunting soon hearts pumping...

June 1/08 I shot this interior grizzly just north of Fort St James after skinning it out and getting it down to Steve @ Wildlife Designs in 150 Mile House I have been patiently waiting for some news.

Today Steve gave me a call then sent these 2 pictures of the work in progress, I'm now thinking I don't have a wall big enough...

Picture of when we walked up to the bear the picture does not do this bear justice it was way bigger than the pic shows.

Pic of Steve's employee he is 6' 4" tall.

Steve is 6' tall and is standing on a 42" high table and he tells me that from the nose to the board just below his left hand is 3 feet...

I shot the bear with a Rem 700 LSS in 375 RUM loaded with 300gr Partitions at 2775fps it was about 9:15pm when I shot and it got dark at just after 10pm so my son and I came back in the morning to find the bear.

When we walked in to the thick bush were the bear ran into after being shot I was carrying my Marlin 1895GS 45-70 with 525gr Beartooth WLNGC's @ 1600fps my son carried his 8.5" Dlask Rem 870 12 gauge loaded with 3" Brenneke slugs.

I bought the Marlin as a regular GS then saw that Marlin had done a special run of 500 black/gray laminate stocked GS's so I called them and smoozed them into selling/sending me the stocks.

From what they told me I am the only person that they were selling the stocks to.

That's cool how that bear let you rub it's belly like that.

That's how it was laying when we found it, it had piled up while it was in a full out run, it bowled over a few trees and it was laying side ways to the direction it was running.

Well, I guess that I had better get my two bits in as well, your right about the field pic not doing the bear justise,it's hard to take good pics of bears. You really well not get the full concept of its size until you try and display it on your wall!! NICE BEAR!

Your so right about pictures...

I tried telling people that it's estimated weight was appr 1000lbs (it was a spring bear that would of weight at least 200lbs more in the fall) and people were saying no way that is 500lbs tops...

and "NO" I don't have a wall big enough...

Holy Cow! That's a nice bear. What were the measurements, pad width, skull size, teeth condition, shot distance?

Camp Cook
03-06-2009, 01:31 PM
Skull was unofficially scored at 24 1/16" which is huge for an interior grizzly and when I get my act together and get it scored I hear it will make the B&C all time record book...

Teeth were starting to wear out and a few were starting to rot...

The bear was estimated at 33 years old I will send in a tooth to confirm.

Shot was 130 - 150 yards at least that is what I thought it was when I took the shot when we finally found the bear and I saw that it was about 1/3 bigger than I had thought it was the night before I walked back out to were the bear was standing when I shot it and lasered to appr were I had shot from...

The shot was actually between 230 - 250 yards which is why I like my Rem 700 LSS in 375RUM with 300gr bullets they fly fast and flat the rifle is sighted in dead on at 200 yards so my shot hit almost exactly where I had aimed.

I did not take measurements of the pads best I can do is post a few more pictures.

The knife in the pictures is a Cold Steel Trail Master it has a 9.5" blade I am 6' 3" tall and weigh 220lbs my son is 5' 9" and weighs the same as me for a size comparison.

Some damage the bullets did eh? Once again nice bear!

Camp Cook
03-07-2009, 08:26 AM
The holes you see are the exit out of the lungs/rib cage and the entrance into the leg/shoulder the bullet exited and the bear still ran 75 yards...

It's why I have a good chuckle when I read about the supposed new king... :D

I just did a Ballistic Calculator check with a 200 yard zero the 300gr Patition was only 3.3" low at 250 yards was still doing appr 2250fps and 3300 ft lbs of energy.

What do you estimate the hide weighed when you hauled it out? It must have been some kind of heavy!

Camp Cook
03-13-2009, 03:58 PM
It would only be a wild guess 200lbs...

All I remember is that it was very very heavy...

Once we had it all fleshed out I'd guess 40 - 50 lbs.

That is a pretty impressive interior grizz I bet you smile every time you look at that rug!!

Camp Cook
03-13-2009, 09:26 PM
Nope not a smile yet, I just hang my head in disbelief exhale slowly and say "WOW were am I going to put it"...

I still don't really grasp how huge it is...

I have to get up to Wildlife Designs to pick it up and I can't go for 2 more weeks so I'm once again working on my patience or lack of...

It's finally home that is my younger son he is 2 years old today...

You guys remember how to judge a bears size you look at it's ears...

If the ears are big the bear is small, if it has small ears the bear is big, if you can hardly see the ears the bear is

Update = I finally got the skull officially scored ok so I have been busy... :)

Late Friday afternoon I was able to get to the Chilliwack Huntfest when I was leaving I saw the BC & Boone & Crockett scorers booth so I had to head back today with the grizzly skull to get it officially scored.

Well it makes both books the official score is 24 3/16" in the 4 years since I shot this bear the scorer figured the skull shrunk appr 2/16" - 3/16" oh well better late than never.

EDIT TO ADD; The skull scores with several others that score the same @ 347 in the BC record book I have no idea where it scores in the B&C yet not bad considering this is an interior bear being compared to the usually far larger coastal bears.

Here is a pic of the grizzly rug on the wall at the Langley Wholesale Sports I didn't have room anywhere in my house for it and I have now moved to a far smaller house = I had nowhere to hang it so I approached Rick Stahl when he was still at the Langley WSS asked if he had a place on the wall for the rug...
