Hey,

Just moved out to the lower mainland in BC from Ontario. Just getting used to the place and now my empoyer is moving me up to Fort St John later in November.

Just wondering if anyone from this forum is from that neck of the woods at all?

I'd enjoy chatting and finding out what sort of game is available up there and any stories you've got to share. Also once I'm settled in up there I'll be looking for some new hunting buddies.

Thanks

Welcome to the north. I have been living in Fort St John for a number of years now. Be glad to swap some stories, or help you out with some area info.

mulies, whitetails, elk, moose, bear, sheep, goats, caribou, wolves, coyotes, geese, ducks, grouse...etc

best be finding some friends with permission on private land for deer ;-)

Hmmm...starting to get excited already! :)

Guess I'll have to start packing something with a bit more pop than my .243 win and the 12 guage. Haven't really hunted big game before so am really looking forward to it. Back in Ontario I was pretty much restricted to Ducks, Geese, Rabbits, Ground Hogs, Coyotes.

Raz, I'd be interested in chatting sometime...feel free to email me anytime.

pick up a good 270, 280, 7mm Mag, 30-06 or 300 Mag and you'll be set for anything up there

Been thinking of what to get...was pondering with the idea of a .340 Wby...would like something big enough to put down a slightly annoyed bear if I have to, plus I do enjoy long range marksmanship.

If you are used to a .243, probbaly the worst thing you could do is get something like the 340 Weatherby...

The 30-06, 7RM and 300's are probably the most used guns in that area.

I would not feel undergunned anywhere in BC with one of those cartridges, I have seen a grizzly do a bang flop with a 7RM, and walked up to another that got 2 hits form a 300 and it was down. Don't worry aboutthe bears, use good bullets and go hunting.

Hmmm maybe you're right. I'm not too worried about the punishment from one...I don't plan on taking it to a range and putting a box of rounds through it :-)

Maybe I've been reading too many big game safari books though!

I shoot a .340 sako with a muzzle break and it is not all that bad for recoil.

For you - used to shooting a 243 ... and 12 ga.

The perfect no nonsense choice is a 30-06 with 165gr bullets for everything the Peace country has.

Maybe you have!!

Almost all BC hunters tend to use cartridges in that range (add in .280, 308, 270 etc)

Sure, there are some guys that like to hunti with a 30-30, or others that like a .338 (I like my 375 H&H for bears but I've killed more with smaller cartridges)

Bit for the mnost part, a 30-06 class cartridge with some good bulets solves all problems.

Despite what I like to say, thee really AREN"T really grizzly bears waiting behind every bush, waiting to POUNCE!8-)

It has been my experience that the 30 cal magnums have the worst recoil. The 338 and the 340 are pussy cats compared to them. The 338 would likely be easier to get and cheaper for factory loads though. Fred

I also nominate the .30-06 as being one of the handiest all around calibre's ever. Small enough for deer, big enough for moose, and definitely enough to ruin a bear's day if you have to (or want to).

Howdy,
When you get up here give me a buzz 789-6792 and I'll show you some of the country here. I was out yesterday grouse hunting and between 8-11 saw 10 moose, 1 cow, 9 bulls and 5 were legal. You will definitely be in the right spot here. The fishing is pretty good too!

Hey BCBowman,

Sounds good. I'll be heading up that way in late November so will give you a buzz once my wife and I are settled in somewhere. Still have to find a place to live. You don't know anyone renting out a two bedroom apartment / Townhouse / Duplex by any chance? :)

I can't wait to get up there now after hearing about all the game available. Fishing sounds pretty good too...Walleye capital of BC from what I hear.

yeah fishing is good here. I'll keep my ear to the ground about a suite for you too! PM me and I'll get your number and I'll call you with some listing out of the paper too!.

I use an -06 as well as my everything gun. It would drive me crazy to have more than 1 big game gun. Always second guessing if I brought the right one. It's bad enough debating weather I should bring the .22 with me half the time.
