Anyone ever done this? Just curious. I have yet to bag one, I'm not sure the wife will "let me". Some of the older ones are a bit more beat up, but I think they might still may make a good mount. What do you look for in a cougar? And what is the best position to mount a cougar? Standing erect? Laying down? Any advice would be awsome.

Depends on the cougar. some look better in different positions than others. I kinda like the one with the front paws out, mouth open in a snarl and the tail up in the air, like it's about to pounce you know. Before you do it look around, some places are cheaper than others.........

Some places also make the cougar look realistic while others look like they they were done by a 5 year old. Remember you get what you pay for.

I saw a nice one done by Dan at Glacier Mtn Taxidermy where the cat was laying on a log with two legs dangling. Here's the link to a picture on his webpage

Awesome mount, very realistic.
I prefer the look of the mount without the mouth open. To me, they are more attractive when they are done a relaxed, calm posture. But it's all personal preference as you are the one that'll be admiring it every day so get it done whatever way will please you the most.

I like the 'laying on a branch' pose... Looks like he's waiting for dinner.

a rug is the only way to go.

the full mounts always end up looking awkward and tacky in 99% of folks places. Unless you have a trophy room with alot of floor space stick to things you can put on a wall.

What kind of response would you think you would get?? LOL

Anyhow I would get the pounce position on a small mammal/grouse or something, usually looks cool!

For a big tom you want a wall mount preferably standing /stalking! When you mount a big cat lying down they appear smaller!

Here is how I got mine done up.

They also look good on a tree branch.

For a big mature tom, you will be looking at about $5000 to get a lifesize done by a real good lion taxidermist. There are lots of good taxidermists out there, but not a lot of good lion taxidermists. A guy can have the art of deer down to a science, but lions are a total different thing. One has to really shop around and look at a lot of work before making that choice. Do you want a lion that looks spectacular, or do you want a lion that looks like a cartoon character? This goes for rug mounts and lifemounts both.

Yeah, and be sure to know the taxi! I got one that made B&C, took it a fellow and waited a couple of years to get it back. It was just a rug with head, mouth open. The one I got back wasn't the one I shot. Smaller, wrong colour, and the bullet hole in the wrong place. I'm thinking he sold mine and had to wait untill he got one close. What can you do? Nothing!DP

If me I would want him up on an old tree and it up on a branch snarling at you.

I likem with the mouth wide open and kinda cross eyed . With a mount done like this you would always be remembered when walking by it why you hate cats .

I love the one of the cat in the rafters, that has to be one of the coolest mounts I've seen. LR

And some of you guys bitch that this site is getting away from hunting.
I know the temptation was too great, but lets keep this track about big cats.
Thanks Steeleco

Well thank you all for your help! I knew there had to be a few guys on here who had stuffed a cougar or two. I am not such a fan of the cougar rugs though. Hopfully next season I can bag one. Cheers, Dave

Saw lots of cougars when I went to see Rod Stewart. Didn't really fancy mounting any of them though.

Yah, I thought this thread was the matched-pair for the "Eat a Beaver" thread... But as an aside...good ideas here for those that have been successful in bagging cougar (the wild variety)
