View Full Version : Parachuting in for sheep ????.

hunter1947

For sheep hunting I was thinking about maybe parachuting into a valley between two mountain top ,throwing out the gear with a tracking device on it ,then me jumping out just after I let my cargo go ,what do all you sheep hunters think about this.

Then I would get the float plane to pick me up in 10 days at the lake seven thousand feet below me http://www.huntingbc.ca/forum/images/icons/icon6.gif http://www.huntingbc.ca/forum/images/icons/icon12.gif.

Not sure how you would get your rifle on the ground safely but it sounds like it could be effective. I've often wanted to kayak across/down rivers to get to some tough access sheep trails too. I think you should do it:p

This sounds like an expensive hunt. I would buy a trials bike before I would buy a parachute.

probably the same way the soldiers in the airborne do it. either packager it well and where it slung over the shoulder, or package it better and send it with the gear drop.

if you can afford 3 chutes (one for gear, one main for yourself and one reserve), and have experience parachuting, it's actually a great idea. but as the one poster mentioned, what do you do with the chutes when you land? i suppose you could bury them, soldier style and leave them, but that would mean you have money to throw away and should probably just get a guided hunt.

hunter1947

First of all a parachute in weight is only 20 pounds.

This is the way it would go ,there would be 3 of us going on this trip ,tow would land down at the lake with the 3 guns as for very little gear 80% of the gear would fall from the sky with the parachute.

The would meet me latter in the day where we marked in on the map our cornets.

Our main camp will be where the gear etc lands ,then hunt from there as for making a spike camp on our sheep outings.

As for the chutes the 3 of us would have one each to pack out when the trip was over.

This is one way for us old chompers to get into the hi country without killing our selfs for sheep ,LOL.

And yes I have parachuted for years in the past.

When the trip is over its down hill all the way for this old salty chomper ,http://www.huntingbc.ca/forum/images/icons/icon12.gif LOL.

Maybe not as thrilling, but would'nt it be easier and cheaper to just charter a helicopter to drop you off?

This thread gets me thinking.... we're going to be inundated with people that have the $$ buzzing around the skies out in the back country. - Don't like that thought..

I would suggest this be a HALO Flight and that you deploy your chute 200 feet from the ground, thus avoiding all radar and being able to really sneak up on them thar sheep.

Its illegal to use a chopper for drop off.

It is also illegal to fly around looking for game animals with a plane.

You old paratrooper you! Are you going to kill it with a blow gun you whittle out of the trunk of a 1000 year old cedar tree you find when you land and have Rambo, your personal buddy and hunting partner help you pack it out? This is the best thread I have seen in weeks in here.... laughed my ass off. Thanks Wayne~!

The good thing about the coast factor is that all 3 of us would be in the plane to get to our designation.

I jump out first then they my 2 partners keep an eye on me from in the plane above ,then after I land on the ground they boot the gear out so I can see where it lands.

Then they land down at the lake. http://www.huntingbc.ca/forum/images/icons/icon6.gif.

Wayne...for christ sake....You trying to kill yourself?? LETS have a look back on 2008 at how good your luck was??? Shall I say more? LMAO
If you thought that scope on the nose hurt....can you imagine what hitting the ground at 200 miles an hour would feel?

It is in how you land when coming to the ground ,you guide along for the last 200 feet on a 45 degree angle ,this cushions your landing ,you hit the ground a about 15 miles an hour LOL http://www.huntingbc.ca/forum/images/icons/icon12.gif.

Well it sounds like a great idea! Personally I'd just do without thents and use the parachute canopy for that, plus you'd have lot's of parachute cord to play with. No need for a backpack, just use the empty parachute bags, and the canopies will cut into some very fancy game bags. To save even more weight just use extra canopy material to fashion your own sleeping "sacks". They also make good pouches to collect rain water in, can be used a bandages, dressings and slings, make fancy bandana's and for the older crowd can be folded up and used as "depends"!

Quick questions, so you don't spook the sheep are you thinking of doing a HALO jump?

Let us know how it went, we may want to emulate you!

Yep! Big ones!

Only need a couple feet to get airborne. Restrict flights to calm evenings / mornings.

Learn to fly one in 5 days. Chalk up more flying on the home front and you're good to go.

The places you could go with one of these. Gravel bar / mountain top landings.

Before you go want to sell me that Cross-bow or might you will it to me? LOL
I hope you land on the plateau and not a drop off.
All this said I know of an individual that used a hang glider type to get off the mountain quick, oh and no he did not have a Ram to bring down. that would be for another day. Some of these guys sure have some nice equipment and good if not interesting idea's.

I am not arguing with ya Wayne. You're old enough to make your own decisions! :) I've just spent enough time on and around sheep mountains to know it's not a good idea for me.

If you were ex-special ops, or a paratrooper with a few 1000 jumps under your belt then maybe not so crazy.

As for the paraglider (go-kart) idea One quick gust o'wind and you'd be mashed potatoes on the side of a mountain.

I have a bud who para glided of the mountains with his ram the last two years running. Another option would be a powered parasail that way you get to scout the terrain find a good place to land set up camp and go hunting. a personal bush plane with a small landing and take off, great stol capabilities.

The wife and me had a set back last night ,she said if I do a stupid thing like parachuting out of a plane in the mountains that she won't be home when I get back http://www.huntingbc.ca/forum/images/icons/icon9.gif.

She said that the wind might be blowing and the wind could take you into the side of the mountain ,then what ,I don't want to sitting at home waiting for a knock on the door and a police officer saying sorry your husband had a fatal accident.

How long after parachuting from a airplane do you have to wait before you can hunt?

Who pays for the rescue when you wreck yourself landing on the uneven, windy mountain terrain.

There is nothing in the regs that say anything about a time frame after parachuting out of a plane.

See "It's Unlawful" page 18, item 9.

6 hours,,,,I don't think the method of disembarkment makes any difference.

6 hours isn't a big deal anyway, unless your an experienced jumper it will take you that long to get "cleaned up"........

Realistic: You 'may' do a tandem jump or two just for kicks which is quite safe and your wife may support.

Unrealistic: You sky diving out of a plane to land on a mountain top to hunt.

More realistic if you were really serious: Power Paragliding. (just get the option you would have for a 2nd passenger to pack your gear!!

I reckon Wayne was never going to parachute in for sheep. This is a brilliant plan and now with the idea outed, there will be a flurry of young gun hunters planning the first para/sheep hunt right now.
Imagine the film royalties from the movie.
But remember Wayne thought of it first.

Bad luck BCrams, motorized para sail would be classed as aircraft and is not daredevil enough. As Wayne dreamed, silently parachute in.
All royalties go to Wayne.

ultralight homebuilt whatever - there's a pile of aircraft that will get you in and out on the market today.

the merlin ez flyer is kinda exciting. 2 seater t/o roll 50 ft, landing 175. Does 70 mph in cruise - gets you where you want to go. I can think of a couple lakes that it would be great on or a couple of piles of dirt that would open up a lot of country that you currently can't get at unless you have horses and an extra 4-6 days to ride in and out.

Well you'll probably want someone with a license to fly it.

I think the ultralight license is cheap (1-2K) but I'd be terrified to fly with somebody in the mountains with 10 hours tt or even a couple hundred for that matter.

You only need insurance if you're planning on crashing!!!!!!!!!!!!:razz::razz:

Not a lot of air at the top of the average mountain. My old 172 take forever to climb higher than 10000 ft. Won't lift much weight that high either. Sure comes down fast, though. I suspect a parachute would come pretty quick too. I like the theory about the moose in the water. Next year's Christmas wish list will definitely include camo snorkel gear. Does anybody make a compound bow type spear gun?
