Gatehouse flew up for a few days of predator hunting, despite being hobbled with torn cartilage in his knee. http://predatorhuntcanada.ca/forum/images/smilies/frown.gif We can't access most of my spots because he can't go very far, and he falls alot in extreme pain...it's kinda funny but sad at the same time http://predatorhuntcanada.ca/forum/images/smilies/tongue.gif

So we basically have to stick close to the roads.

Saturday afternoon we made two stands. No action on the first one, where we snoeshoed 1/4 mile from the truck into a field. This is where we both discovered how bad his knee really was.

Second stand we hid the truck in a clear cut and hid ourselves in the snowbank of the plowed logging road. We called with a mix of howls and distress, the only action we had was a grey hawk swooping the Jack in the Box decoy

This morning we awoke at 6am, which was a bit rough as we didnt go to bed until 2am http://predatorhuntcanada.ca/forum/images/smilies/biggrin.gif -34 degrees...COLD. no action on the first stand which only lasted 12 minutes before the warmth of the truck was too strong to resist. We visited a friend for a couple hours and waited for the sun to warm up the temps a bit.

Around noon we made our 2nd stand, hiking through the knee deep snow 50 yards to the edge of a field. Gatehouse couldnt make it that far so he hung back and covered one angle while I covered the other. Started with a couple female invitation howls, within a couple minutes I noticed some movement on the field edge ahead on my side. I glassed it and it was a coyote! http://predatorhuntcanada.ca/forum/images/smilies/biggrin.gif 225 yards away. I slowly chambered a round and shuffeled over for a shot.

http://predatorhuntcanada.ca/photos/data/500/Jan_25_09_005.jpg

pretty scruffy looking little male. It was a relief to finally call in my first coyote of the year after about 10 dry sets

We drove off into the logging country and made a few more stands, seen some moose and a decent amount of wolf & coyote sign. No real action until sundown when 25 minutes into the last set, a coyote returned a howl from a ways off behind us (where the truck was). After exchanging a few words with it, and the temps plummeting again with the sun dissapearing, we headed back to the truck and drove the hour home

one more day tommorow hopefully disabled Gatehouse can get a coyote.

here he is, a real "action shot" of my son!

started the morning, -30C at daybreak, in a small gravel pit

http://usera.imagecave.com/ws6/Yoodles/Jan%2026%2009%20001.jpg

The only action we had, was Gatehouse dropping his glasses and us having to turn around and return to get them once we get a few minutes down the road

here is my narcoleptic son

http://usera.imagecave.com/ws6/Yoodles/Jan%2026%2009%20003.jpg

We head off to a different area, to find a pig carcass thrown in the ditch on side of road with a bunch of ravens. We stop a hundred yards up the road and I tried a few howls on the Foxpro to see if any yotes were nearby. Almost instantly we had a pair riled up, howling back as us from the bush nearby, and they sounded only a couple hundred yards off. They never did appear, but we were surrounded by private farmland anyways so it was a no shoot situation. Would of been fun to see them though

We stop a few more spots to howl, getting responses every time. They were all on private land so we couldnt go after them, but it was some action at least

We spotted a yote about 900 yards out in a field at the end of a lake. Up the road a few KM we stop at a gravel pit and called for a while until a truck drove by. Quite a bit of wolf and coyote sign along the road, looked promising!

We headed back to town for more fuel and some lunch. The same coyote which was in the field was back, and very vocal. He was challenge howling, so we played around with him a bit with the foxpro then after he trotted into the brush we headed to town.

The afternoon we spent cruising around looking for a spot to call. We spotted a fox on a brushy hillside, and a coyote trotting across a field (again, no permission).

This is pretty exciting hunting, just ask Gatehouse http://predatorhuntcanada.ca/forum/images/smilies/biggrin.gif

http://usera.imagecave.com/ws6/Yoodles/Jan%2026%2009%20002.jpg

Just before dark we made the final stand of the hunt in some logging area. The snow was falling and the wind was blowing, no action after 25 minutes we headed for home

http://usera.imagecave.com/ws6/Yoodles/Jan%2026%2009%20004.jpg

That's it. 500km travelled, 1 coyote shot, non stop laughter and to top off the trip I have a professional chef cooking me dinner in my home http://predatorhuntcanada.ca/forum/images/smilies/tongue.gif not bad at all

just an "off " topic suggestion here fella's but this afternoon there were 6 yoties on the lake , they were checking all the holes from yesterdays ice fishing, just a thought if there is a lake nearby, and it isn't surrounded by dwellings, it may be a spot to be! 8-)

Aparently it's too cold outside all the time in the Okanagan............... Road hammer, you never wore your knees out playing football, unless that is what you call being the quarterback of the debate team.....sure flap your gums alot but can't seem to wear them out.

Nice work on taking one dog Bartell. As for Gate, you might want "fix" his other knee and heave him into the ditch, use him as bait tomorrow.......

Clarke, have you thought of contacts instead of glasses for hunting. Way easier, no fogging up and easier to use a scope and binos. Or are they just for reading up close?

I don't know why I never thought to talk to you before abotu it...I've got pretty good vison. I can drive and do most things without them- I don't wear glasses at work except on computer. I use the glasses for watching TV or using computer and when hunting, since they crisp things up for me quite a bit. Still, they fog up and are crap in wet weather and I take them off and lose them alot.

I guess I shoudl look into contacts, although I dont like the idea of shoving things in my eye. I don't think my eyes are bad enough to go for laser surgery, otherwise I'd do that.:p

well if you are interested you can send me a pm with your Rx in it and I can kind of give you a heads up on what to expect. Once you get past the idea of them in your eye its no big deal and with current technology lenses are very comfortable. Your biggest hurdle would be dealing with such little medical devices with those large hands and fingers. But its doable, have had many patients with the same obstacle.
