A bear being taken just as it's approaching a quivering David Susuki would be nice..

....or just after:cool:

make sure you got a good view of the bear in the camera for the shot, thats the biggest thing I find. Also get as much footage of the stalk as possible so there is some background to the kill.

Good camera work. Good visual balance. Tell the story with pictures in a way that makes sense. Show the country side, establish where you are hunting with wide field of view.

Stalking is most important to me in a hunting vid, and I guess that the least important is the "Hooting/Hollering and High 5's after the shot:roll:"

I like to listen to someone who is interesting when they talk. Some guys read off the script when nararating the hunt over the tape. I like words on the screen of what is being said if you cant hear the people clearly. I like reasons why you are doing whatever you are doing in the hunt. Also, it has to be fun and exciting, good music, and entertaining. Bloopers are always fun. Biggest thing for me is that it must be interesting and real.

just my opinion, but I can totally do without the dramatic music that are in alot of DVD's while there is a stalk being done, or a deer/bull approaching. It doesn't make it any more exciting for me. Alot of times, I just end up turning the volume way down on some. I like the Primos elk videos as far as being able to hear the calls, hear the animal breaking branches or bugleing as it approaches, or even just hearing the wind in the trees.

I want to see guys driving down a logging road. Spotting a bear, getting out and shooting it. In a first person narrative. You could call the video, " Gittin' er Done with Fisher-Dude: Badass Black Bears".

Yep the full stalk, killed from a bow (bears are easy) no lame advertising and nothing over and above what you'd do IF the camera wasnt rolling. Super lame when guys try and pump it up for the camera, its fake.

real hunters and not richy rich with a pocket full of cash .

Guides that are real guides and not ones you find out later are affiliated with poachers and wildlife criminals .
I would like to see more hound hunting shown in a respectable manner and following the trail and sound of the hounds and not with some hillbilly hooting away at the tree .

And for god sakes portray the use of GPS or telemtry in a positive light and not in a way people will think that all you do is let go of the dogs watch the screen and shoot an animal.

save the high fives and other childish acts for the playground

I think what makes great movie is the stuff that most edit out... the funny "real" part of hunting with your freinds all the stuff that happens behind the camera ... the "f"ups and the jokes .. its not allways just about kill after kill after kill... and i really hate when there in tight on a stalk and then all of a sudden the camera is like pointed back at the hunter like the camera man is right where the animal is..... and when they film a shot after its been killed and its sooo obvious

moosinaround
01-26-2009, 03:11 PM
All the above as mentioned, but do show the kill as well! Its a hunting video, and critters are killed when hunting! Try to keep the camera still on long high power footage. A guy sometimes feels like puking when trying to watch shaky footage. Moosin

For the love of Mother, Mary and Joseph, and Peter, Paul and Mary (again), DO NOT do the "fff, fff, fff" noise, lip-quiver, trembling hands, on the verge of tears" thing Ralph and Vicki do on Archer's Choice!!!!!!!
Someone else did that on another hunting show, and I thought, "Oh my gawd, it's infectious, run for your lives........"
I can understand excitement, but.........

Ive been a part of TV hunting a hand full of times.....cheezy music sucks bad...stalking into the camera is just wrong...trying to make yourself out to be a 'hunting god' is brutal as well.....REAL stalk footage...WAYY EXCITED EMOTIONS/ kill moment caught is 60% of the good...tripod use doubles quality big time where possible.....lots of game footage helps big time..( doesnt have to be monster stuff either )....if you have to talk..think about your 'delivery' to the camera...example...using the word ' I'..you can either sound like an ego moron - " I KNEW he would do this...I KNEW he would do that,I have done this many times , I made a perfect shot , I know this/that..I , I , I...lame....I AM COOL:roll:...lolol...

How about , WE were VERY lucky to come across...or We HOPED he would... , or we thought that MAYBE he would...or we were SOOO excited and fortunate...thankfully the shot was good ect ect...WAYY more appealing to your viewers.....clean kill / repsect for the harvest rocks out!..

i like when they pull the trigger and the animal just drops!!! But i like all homemade vidoes with no edits! my buddie done one of moose hunting and there was more funny shit in it and the odd bit of swearing that if u had to edit it there would be nothing there haha and overall his video turned out pretty damn good. just keep it simple and it will be good!!

My favorite is when the guy climbs back two mountain ranges behind the animal then hold the arms out for the photo of the dead animal.

It's A MONSTER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!

Or bait at the bottom of the treestand and then video narration that sets things up like you were on the 'perfect trail' and the animals always stop at that tree and eat old pine needles there all the time.

I guess anything but americanize it and you'll be fine!!!!!!

I'm in. What you describe is how Real Bear Hunters hunt. We can use a Hood Cam and get some great action on film. Remember to keep the diesel above 1000 rpm so the video isn't shaky.

Maybe a fireside chat with Kechika about taking chicks with big boobs on a hunting trip.

A cooking segment with Gatehouse and NHT.

A Hunting Gear segment where Bartell sells Rishu a bunch of shit he doesn't need.

What about a Biology segment where PGK tells us about fields full of black/panda hybrid bears near McBride?

The possibilities are endless.

How about a little info such as calibre and bullet used, shot distance, stalk distance and time, show the lay of the surrounding land and try to keep it clean (language) so the whole family can enjoy! Some footage before and after the actual stalk/kill shot is always welcome and adds to the romance of the hunt.

I like seeing more of the actual hunt not just a guy sitting in a stand and taking his pick of the many many animals that come his way. A good stalk is neat to see. It good when the stalk can be captured real time from a seperate location. Its pretty cool when you can see the quarry and the hunter in the same shot during a stalk.

A good hunting video has a close up of the animal being shot then lots of footage of the tracking and trophy after its found. Even though we all give high fives and yell after we shoot something, it looks kind of trashy to others that haven't done it before. Last thing is that there's no need to thank god for blessing you with the animal you have just shot, if god wanted it dead I think he could kill it himself. Good luck.

Do show the hunts as they happen, including the times you get busted, miss the shot etc.

Don't spend more time promoting brand X gear than actually hunting in the vids. The campfire chats following the hunt are always boring too, so leave them out.

The sponser crap sucks but pays. As others have posted film the REAL hunt. I would watch a hunt video regardless if the animal was taken or not IF it filmed the actual camp set up, the team work of the guys, the glassing and stalking, etc. and the REAL stuff.

Alot of folks take Tred Barta with a good or bad opinion but I like his approach to his videos with the lack of sponsers and his outlook on the hunting industry in general and love his rants. Yeah he showed a wounded doe deer that got away but who else shows that stuff?????

Real people that are hunting, not "Johnny Shooter" from Shooter's magazine dressed in Khakis and Penny loafers. How about Johnny blue collar from the local mill, who actually appreciates being out. Since hunters are the ones watching this, why not add the field dressing and quartering/packing if applicable. Shelley and Courtney had a good idea with the recipe/bbq idea after the show. Bloopers are great as they show us that we are all human and sh*t happens. Either way Ill buy your video . Rob

Keep it to something that would be affordable to the average guy...not two chefs tableside aka Canada in the Rough? Not much that I have seen for Buffalo [bison]hunts....and please no celebrity guy hunters...kids are always great..first timers....and show some of the work that is involved, gutting, quartering, skinning, packing etc...make each vid a little educational would help lots of newbies and probably some oldies too.

Things I don't like to see

- Some guy screaming at the top of his lungs, yeeeehaaaa, whooooohoooo. Celebration of a good hunt is fine but some guys are WAY too dramatic
-Guys who shoot the animal and immediatly turn to the camera and start talking instead of hunkering behind the scope to make sure the job is indeed done.
-People sitting on the animal, drives me nutz

Things I like to see.

-Camp shots
-Daily review and dialogue regardless if an animal has been shot, adds nicely to the leadup, instead of going straight into the kill shot.
- I always like to hear about the rifle the hunter is using as well as bullet combo. Makes for good info for our own hunts.
-I like to see the animals score as well, also makes for good info on field judging animals.

I'm the opposite.

After having clients carry tape measures around and then seeing it with stone hunters I can say I don't like seeing or hearing the score.

When a guys lip begins to drop because his ram only scores 164", not the 165" he thought, things have gotten pretty pathetic.

I think there's far too much emphasis placed on numbers instead of the hunt and the animal.

That problem is with the hunter then, as a person watching the video I like to see the scores because it aids in field judging animals in the wild. They don't have to whip out the tape measure right on the mountain but a reference to the score narrated into the video is always appreciated

Most video's show a short hunt, a kill, and lot's of bragging, end of video. Show the real hunt, the stalk, the kill, the harvesting of the meat, the pack out. Anyone can pull a trigger, it takes a hunter to harvest a animal from the bush to the table. I realy believe have of these video makers don't know how to gut a animal

my favourite vids are on public land without atv's or on logging roads in the backcountry with just two people, also show the stalk its the most exciting part and try and have youth hunts, also say where you are and what mu your in its helpful for the veiwer, this goes without saying but make sure your are doing everything safe and legal I hate seeing shows were they have the saftey off as they jump around unsafe sportsmen.

I like hunting videos that are done as realistic as possible. However, having been part in videos and TV shows myself I know that there is no way to do without “fake” scenes. When hunting there is very little that can be shot with the camera due to the game spooking movement involved. This means most of the scenes where hunter’s are talking, stalking, aim, shooting closeup (pulling trigger) and so on are reenacted before or after the hunt. The magic is in how cleverly the video is edited in the cutting room that makes it look fake or real.

Good luck with the videotaping and have fun.

Blacktail hunting!!!!!!!

Man I saw a blacktail video at the Sportsman's show in Washington a couple of years ago and I'm still kicking myself for not buying it:sad:. Not enough of them around. If someone came up with an Island/ Lower Mainland blacktail video I would buy it in a heartbeat (hint hint). Nice and low budget (but good film work) with all the REAL stuff.

I like the Lancaster vid's no re-enacted scenes (that I can tell and besides their too busy doing their jobs for that). B.C./Yukon/NWT all the way:D.

Self filmed hunts can be real works of art and challenging. You might not get the actual kill shot for obvious reasons but they have the challenge and realism that most folks desire.

A few self shot video's come to mind that I know folks watch over and over again.

"700 miles alone" (a great and interesting video)
"Alone in the Wilderness" (although not a hunting video a true work of art)
"Primal Dreams" (only some of this video was self shot but impressive and won awards).

Just an idea.
