If You WANT toi buy a new gun, the 20 Guage is a great upland option.

If you don't HAVE to buy a new gun, the 12 guage will work fine, just aim a the heads!

A 12 that's loaded up w/ target loads will do just fine for Grouse. IMO if you're wanting a new shotty, the 20 is a better option of the choices offered.

If you're going to ditch shoot them, a 410 is the best. If you want to wing shoot, a 20ga is the best. If you want to blow them in half and not eat them, a 12ga is best. I hate 22s for grouse because you end up with so many lost birds from poor body shots or the like. I've only lost one bird that was hit by a shotgun. And that was because he fell in a river.

22 works fine for me and i havent ruined a bird yet... I just comes down to shot placement and getting good at what you shoot with. But if you just want to shoot away then yes i agree with a 20gauge if you want to use a shotty.

Take the 20 Gauge...shells are about 1/2 the cost of 410's BTW.
My Full choked 20 gauge takes the heads clean off out to 20 meters;-)

99.9% of Grouse in BC are taken while on the ground, yes I know it's not the "Sporting" Man's way to do it but it's the realistic truth ! :p

.22 will do but if one's shot is off and the bird takes flight....well that's what shotguns are made for, you get a 2nd chance to take em on the wing !

Try that with a 22..........

Agreed... I think it comes down to which gun you would prefer to carry around with you as a "bird gun" I would prefer a .22 but thats just from personal experience. And yes 9/10 grouse are taken on the ground or in a position that is easily taken by a .22 IMO

The 12 gauge and .22 are fine guns for small upland game. I use them both and never had a problem with it, as is not enough kill power or wasting meat.

In my 12 gauge I use 2 ¾ shells loaded with #7 ½ shot and they work fine on grouse. Point the gun just above the head of the gun and it will not waste any meat. Pattern your gun at the shooting range, using different chokes to learn which combination gives you the past pellet pattern from 20 to 40 yards.

Get a 20 gauge, way better if you want to do wing shooting and ground swatting. although the 410 is fun but i'd take the 20 gauge any day.

The only guns Ive used to shoot grouse are my 22 and 12 gauge. I prefer the 22, one shot to the head or neck and thats it lol, im getting pretty good all last season I was snipin them at 40-50 yards. But the 12 gauge is fun once in a while when you run into a big group of them haha

To each his own I always say. Use what ever you want and what works for you. I use a 22LR and have a Browning pump 410 shotgun. I use both for grouse and it works for me.
