Well after being put on the waiting list for a Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever litter ready in March I went to see the breeder for one last time. She had said that she had an older pup, 12 weeks old, that she had been keeping for herself. Unfortunately he had not dropped a testicle yet and may never so is not a good breeding candidate.
We met and my fiancee and I fell for him. He showed great concentration and had good eye contact. It was obvious that he was smart and had good solid body in the making.
Well we got him and he's been with us for a week now. He's great and I can't wait to start field training him. He's doing really well with "sit" and "stay" and travels well in the truck. He's met lots of other dogs and people and is very friendly. I am very excited.
If anyone has any tips that would be terrific although I will be reading all the threads on here regarding training.
I have already heard from a couple members about NSDTR's but if anyone else would like to share their experience that would be great.

Great to hear you got your Toller - welcome to the club. I can't find the pics you attached but I'm sure they are in the works.
By now you've read and heard all about Tollers so the only tip I will offer is to make sure you are the boss. If you don't establish that pretty quickly, you will have a small red headed tyrant running your household. Not evil, but he will be the boss.
We gave our girl a bit too much "authority" from the start and 6 years later she may not run the household but she figgers she is at least our equal.
Oh, and remember, they are very smart dogs and need to be stimulated a lot. Obedience classes, tracking, agility, whatever, just involve him in a lot of activities - a tired Toller is a good Toller.

Great looking pup. I'm sure you will have a blast with him. I don't think I've ever met a Toller that didn't have a great personality.

Funny thing though, I've seen way more of them in BC than I did when I lived in Halifax.

Thanks guys. Yes he does seem keen. I also understand and so does my fiancee that time and consistency are the most important factors in his success.

Congratulations and welcome to Toller world! I hope you can make it to the Toller get togethers in the lower mainland and meet some other Toller owners. What's Leo's full name?

And get rid of all your fleece clothing - Toller fur traps they are. :-P
Every where I look, my clothes, the car, the truck, all our furniture, the floor, Toller fur. Its like a weed.
On the other hand, I can have an affair with a red head and tell the wife "It's Molly's fur".

I've been using a de shedding brush and it works great. I am usually slightly allergic to dogs but not to double coat dogs even though they shed. Weird.
