This is the newest addition to the family. He's a pure bred yellow lab from Chilliwack, 8 weeks old, had his shots etc. He's going to be our newest duck dog and my first backpacking mutt. Brought him home today expecting him to be a little shy and nervous. He spent all morning and afternoon exploring the kitchen and the backyard as well as playing until the end result, picture 4. I'll keep you posted on his progress.

Bruin: Gus has the looks of being a great dog.
As a former breeder of hunting stock Labradors, I don't believe you can find a better breed of dog for bird hunting, a partner in the mountains or a devoted, loving and protective family member.

Do believe I passed either you and your pup or it's litter mate while out taking my son fishing on the Vedder River.:?:

Pup had the look and size of Gus.

Have fun with your boy,
Kasomor

Noticed I haven't ever updated this thread. Gus is 1 year and 1 month now. Training went very well, he has alot of natural talent and his drive and energy are incredible. I took him deer hunting a few times this year and he loved it. I will be putting a pack on him this summer. He has filled out nicely, though he's not as big as I thought he would be, he's now about 70-75 lbs. We started him on ducks in October and since our other lab is out of action due to surgery Gus got the feilds to himself all season. His only faulta is that he likes to get quite a ways ahead when walking the ditches and has to be called back often. I hope to work that out of him and also start him with blind retrieves. Does anyone have any tips for those two?? Gus also still has his nuts and I was thinking we should leave them on in case we want to breed him. Anyone have any opinions on that?

Along with Boopers stuff...the book "Training Retrievers to Handle" by James Spencer will get you going in the right direction with handling.

You state...
"His only faulta is that he likes to get quite a ways ahead when walking the ditches and has to be called back often."

...and ask for tips.

I take it your ditch-jumping ducks, yes? My question is...

What do you want him to do?

Cheers,
Kasomor

I would like him to stay within shooting range so he's not jumping ducks before I'm close enough to kill them.

I would like him to stay within shooting range so he's not jumping ducks before I'm close enough to kill them.

With mine I want them at heel.

I have one stays in that position and the other who is allowed to be at max. 2 feet in front of me or else she breaks. She is older and due to horrible training on my part I would have to beat the sh*t out of her now to get her to stay at heel while hunting. I'm not willing to do that.

Your boy is young. Teach him what heel means, that heel MEANS heel and that is where he has to be all the time. If he doesn't know heel position while not in the field he needs to know it before you even get out to the field. You run your dog and someone else shoots until he is solid on this.

And my standard for "heel" is the dog walks beside me or sits beside me until I release it. Heel does not mean... come back to me and then run off again. Set a standard and stick to it.

Got to go shoot me some duckies now....

Happy New Year!
Kasomor
