What power scope would best be suited on top of a 338wm in your opinion and why?

leupold fixed 6x

tons of eye relief, plenty of magnification to shoot moose/elk out to 1/4 mile. Just about bombproof, clear optics, bright in low light, and less expensive compared to a variable

I detest fixed power scopes so I'll suggest just your ol standby 3-9, 2.5-10 or 3.5-10 variables. IMO there is no need to get higher magnification unless you plan on longer range plinking.

I have a Bushnell 2.5x10 on mine and it does everything you need. A variable is a little more expensive but when you think about it everytime you lift your rifle you look throught the scope so it should do what you want.

3-9x40 burris fullfield with bplex. has been my best scope. clear, good in low light, and drives tacks. even after quad roll over

I had a VXII 3-9x40 on top of my 338 Win Mag.

Why ? Because the VXII is the best bang for the buck without question.
I also like the abilty to run it on 3x for bush work etc....9x is nice for range work and or those longer shots while hunting. Maximise your 338's versatility.

I'd go with a 3-9, best of both worlds for a multi purpose hunting rig.

If your going to Africa - 1.75-6x32 VXIII
Standard hunting - 3-9x40
Long range hunting - 4.5-14x(?) whatever you like best for objective size
Target to tactical - Mark 4

I have on my 338 wm sako,a bausch&lomb 3+9 by40 and its handled the recoil nicely. Its not that expensive and it takes a pounding. On my 270, I have a leupold straight 6 and love it for long shots. Just my 2cents on scopes. d6dan

I've got a 3-10 and a 4.5-14... Wish I had a 4.5-14 on both rifles :)

I agree with Bartell, I've got Leopold 6x's or 6x Compacts on all my hunting rifles except the Knight muzzle loader which has a 4x Leoplold. I've found 6x to be a good compromise between field of view at short range and magnification for longer ranges and one less gimmick to mess with or to have go haywire. My motto,,, keep it simple...! For the same reasons I've alwaya shot bows with fingers,,,, no mechanical release to freeze up or malfunction.

It really depends on what type of hunting you are going to do. If it's bush then 1.5 x 6 or 7. standard open all around 3x9; further more open 3.5 x 10 or higher. I use a 2x7 leupold on my .338 and on my past .338 it serves my style of hunting very well. I find 2 works in the bush(at times 2 is too much) and for the further work 7 is more than I have needed for distance stuff. Also the 2x7 is a little bit lighter and more compact than a standard 3x9.

Go for this one. All of the recommendations here are bang on and good advise. It has to boil down to the way you see stuff. Kind of like the photographer, The way a photographer composes and organizes things he sees through his view finder. It is a personnal thing and you must find this out for yourself, no one can tell you or advise you what is the best scope for you. However you can not go wrong with a swaro, it/s the best and a bench mark to judge all others by. For the caliber weapon you wish to mount your scope on this one will do you good and you will not go wrong. Later on you may find that you will get a wild hair where the sun don't shine and you may have a hankern for a 25 power scope. Well so be it, go get it and set er up for 1000 yards plus.
