I could be wrong, But i was told that the markings are from moose eating the bark off of the tree. I have seen this alot in the area I hunt in Alberta. The area has a tone of moose in it.

nwt2002 nailed it.

In the winter time when there are deep snows depths and regular browse is limited, moose will often turn to eating the bark off the trunk of aspen trees. Elk will also do the same thing.

It is quite a common occurence.

Looks kinda high for a moose. Older bear would be my guess, or perhaps....sasquatch. lol:)

It could be from antler rub too - check out the picture labeled 'antler rub':

Not sure about up there, but I know that Porqupines love to climb up trees chew the bark in the winter.
I have seen it in the past in Manitoba and it looks very similar...

Bushape - you will often find these high on the tree trunks ...particularly when there is a deep snow year

DWH - antler rubs and marks left by the incisor teeth are drastically different. Those are not antler rubs.

Thanks guys, One thing I noticed was on one of the trees there was an identical mark but definitely a few years old. It was all dark and dries out, like an old dead fall color. would This be consistant with a moose who ranges the same area?

It's the first time I have seen this. Thanks eh!

I also agree that was caused by a hungy moose

sealevel -

porcupines indeed eat bark, however the teeth marks between a moose and porcupine are different.....as well you will notice the "strip mark" from the bark being torn off the trunk along the edges. Porcupine don't have this ability unless we have a mutant or dinasour age porky on our hands.

True BCrams, but those marks seem relatively fresh and and too early for heavy snow.

i dont think they wait just for snowfall, ive seen those markings at all times of the year
