Crimson Viking

‘Twas the last day of whitetail season, when all through the slash,
Nary a creature was stirring, my hopes were quite dashed;
Earlier the morn, it was just sunlight,
A nice buck showed up, walked right into my sight;
He moved quite fast, through the grass and the snow,
I had no clear shot, so I let him go;
My rifle held in my hands with great care,
With hopes another buck soon would be there;
Many hours passed, having missed my last chance,
I shivered and shook, in my boots and my pants
I started back to my truck, through the new fallen snow,
To head for home, it was a five hour drive you know;
When out ahead, I heard a such a clatter,
I looked up to see what was the matter.
When what to my wondering eyes should appear,
Was a fast moving buck, a whitetail deer;
Up to my shoulder my gun, came like a flash,
I found him in the scope, watching him dash;
I whistled and whistled and whistled again,
Praying he’d stop to play at my game;
“Oh no not again “ I said to myself
Having another run off, would be bad for my mental health;
To the top of the cut, he came to a halt,
And then he looked back the, see what all the commotion was about;
I squeezed off the shot, saw front end fold,
Even before, the recoil took hold;
More rapid than eagles, he sprang from that place,
Into the forest, at such a fast pace;
I paused a few moments, composing myself,
Then went where he stood, to the top of the shelf;
I searched for blood, looking around,
But to my surprise, not a spot was found;
I heard a noise not far away,
With a quick look, I saw where he lay;
It was but a moment, till it was done,
Soon the real work, then begun;
On the way home, I was still stunned by my luck,
Such a beautiful deer, was in the back of my truck;
To all HBC hunters, this lesson I’ll share,
When things look bleak, just you take care
For you never quite know, When your buck might be there.
Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays and a Straight Shooting New Year
