I am looking into getting a Nova Scotia Duck Tolling retriever for a family pet, hunting companion and bird dog. I love this breed even though I have only met a few and am in the market for a good breeder.
The only breeder I have talked to is Tollchester kennels in Chilliwack.

Seem like great dogs and bloodline but there is not much evidence of the dogs being worked in the field. I have asked the breeder for some references as far as owners of dogs from her that are worked and am waiting for this. While I am waiting I wanted to see if anyone here owns a NSDTR, hunts with one or has purchased a puppy from Tollchester kennels.
Are there any other breeders that you recommend?
Any information on your experience with this breed is also appreciated.
Thanks,

Matt

My wife and I have been into Tollers for close to 22 years. We're now have Roux (#4) and Beau (#5). Roux is just over 6 years old and Beau just over 1 year old. Both of these dogs are from Westerleas Kennels which is located just over the border from White Rock in South Surrey. aliso Strang is the breader. she also wrote the book on Tollers -literaly. She has always placed hunting dogs and has made hunting instincts a major consideration in her breeding program.

All of our Tollers were/are nuts about hunting and are wonderful companions in the home. We have used them on Quail, Snipe, Chukars, Ruffed and Blue Grouse, Pheasants, Ducks and Geese.

Here are a couple of pics:

Cajun with a goose that he tolled from a neighboring field. When a dog figurine company in the states made figurines of a toller they used this picture to get the expression on a Tollers face when it's hunting.

Send a PM if you want to contact us to know more about tollers.

I heard that we have a breeder here in Quesnel. I don't know much about the toller, but in case you needed some more info I thought I'd post the breeders website here for you to check out.

Thank you very much guys. Porcupine I have contacted Aliso and will wait her reply as to when she is planning a litter.
Wiley, Dalry's dogs look great too.
I'll be posting what I decide to do and be on here researching for training tips and rules.

When we looked into getting our Toller, the first breeder we contacted was Westerlea. As said, basically THE Toller breeder at the time. She wasn't contemplating any litters at the time and did say that first crack went to hunters which we were not at the time. If she is still breeding, definetly try her first.
Tollchester produces nice Tollers, they started their breeding with "relatives" of our dog and we have a Tollchester male in our agility classes - a fine dog I must say.
I won't recommend or even say our breeder's name as although she produces really nice dogs, she is a bit of an interesting character and I would hesitate to send anyone her way.
There are lots of Toller breeders in the Lower Mainland and Fraser Valley, do a search and check with the Canadian Toller Club too.
When checking the bloodlines / pedigrees, look for ones that have achieved field dog status.
Good luck in your quest - you won't be dissapointed.

Iron Glove- I think I know who you are talking about. I have heard a couple of things about her. Good dogs though.
I have gone through the process with Tollchester and have the opportunity to reserve a male for her January litter. I am very excited and want to just commit so I will have a puppy in March but will wait to hear from Westerlea.
I know that either way he will be a fine Dog I just want to check out all of my options.
Thanks guys

Well due to one pup from the previous litter not dropping a testicle I have got myself a pup from Tollchester. He was the breeders pick of the litter for showing (but not with one testicle) and is showing great retriever potential. "Leo" is 12 weeks old and has been with me for 3 days. He comes when called and sits already. He is pretty good with housetraining but needs to go outside every 30 minutes.
VERY excited about him.
Pics to come.

I own two tollers. Trio is 6, her daughter Tikka is 17 months. I hunt over both. Considering my hunting buddy and I swap out between 4 dogs, the youngest Tikka has brought in over 50 ducks so far this season.
http://www.kasomor.com/100B7212.JPG I I run hunt tests and WC tests in the off season.

Both dogs are also show Champions and Trio has her CDX, while Tikka is attending obedience classes to obtain her CD, but we live to hunt
I breed one or two litters per year.

The NSDTRCC has lots of information about what to look for in a breeder, what to expect when adding a toller to your family, and a Breeders List. It is buyer beware as is everything one purchases these days. http://www.toller.ca/puppy.html

The annual Toller Walk is coming up next month Saturday Feb. 7, 2009 at Barnett Marine Park in Burnaby meet in the parking lot at 10 am. Puppies and non-tollers welcome! There is also a Toller Picnic in the summer time.

Good luck with your new puppy,
Cheers,
