Looking into getting a dog for the spring hunt, and the hunting years after. Wondering what breed of dog would be best. A Lab, or maybe a Beagle. I plan on bringing him with me for big game, and water foul hunts. What type of dog do you have, or do you perfer to hunt without one?

Thanks for your help and input.

I like a Brittany Spaniel too, or the German Spaniel. Beagles make awsome complimentary crosses to either of these breeds. I strongly reccomend researching both the breeds I mentioned and the Beagle before you decide:shock:

The dog I have is a Cocker Spaniel / Beagle cross. Best bird dog out there /hiking companion / household companion,. and even as small as she is, in her younger years it was nothing for her to go horse speed for 30km a day. Spaniels lend themselves to obedience and ease of training. They almost "self train"
(can you tell I love Spaniels)

If you get a half cross or even a quarter cross your dog will have less health problems and live a lot longer:idea:

Lots of good hunting breeds out there. But try and match the dogs energy level with yours. Beagles are busy little guys. Where a lab usually is more subdued. Just something to think about.

Over the last 40 years I have had for friends and hunting buddies many different breeds of dogs. In the end I would say without hesitation that Labs were by far one of the best balanced, best natured, hardest working dogs for hunting, as well as one of the finest all around family dogs a person could ever wish for.
If the opportunity ever presents itself, I hope to one day again have another yellow Labrador like my old Hoss to make hunting memories with.

X2 Very important.....unfair to you and your dog if energy levels aren't compatible. That being said, if you want a highly motivated, loyal, superb hunting dog that will do it all Chessies are a great choice. My boy is just as comfortable retrieving ducks/geese, up land birds, or sitting with me on a deer watch.

Asking for one breed of dog to be all things to a hunter, in NZ anyway, is a bit like expecting one screwdriver to fit all screws these days. I hope you find a suitable dog and long time hunting mate.

I may get burned on this comment but it is my opinion. I have a few dogs over the years and I think a dog that is crossed makes a better dog. Maybe to much inbreeding? Yes I know there are lots of purebreds that are smart. Remember just my opinion. I had a Lab/Chesapeake once he was awesome.

Ive got a pure breed Black Lab, shes 14 mos old. Im hoping this coming hunting season that I can take Her on a few hunting trips(hiking the hills). She listens fairly well(still needs work), but she has been around gun fire already a few times and doesnt seem to bothered by it. I wasnt looking for a dog to sniff out deer for me, but it will be fun to get her out! Rob
