eric's first season

my son-in-law really wanted to go hunting last year but he couldn't co-ordinate work and the core course. he finally challenged the test and passed(he got 100%)but it was too late for last season. he was ready for leh though and he applied for and got his first moose tag.(reg 5).
so we took eric on his first ever hunting trip. we camped at our favorite lake which has awesome fishing. that day eric caught his biggest trout ever twice!

on day 4 we were sneaking alongin some pretty thick stuff and we heard a twig snap. eric says "there's a bull" and buddy says "shoot it". so eric takes aim with my dad's old 303(rip dad) pow! and the bull takes off seconds later we hear a lot of crashing and then the unmistakable sound of a lung shot. " he's down" i say and we give it a minute and then go in and eric finishs him off. erics first big game animal!

now we can concentrate on other things and a couple days later eric connects on his first deer.

back at home eric spends 45 min in my tree stand(first time hunting blacktails) and grunts this buck in. he keeps his cool and lets the buck get close(30ft) and waits for him to turn broadside before letting him have with oo buck. boy was he excited.

Unbelievable first season, thats a hell of a way to start, congrats!
I've hunted over 37 years and seasons like that don't come often enough.

eric's blacktail is 16" inside spread. he's gonna have to wait a while i think before he gets another one like that.

sorry sideofabarn only one daughter and i don't think i can keep up to one son-in-law! but i'll give him a run for his money lol.
on a side note we almost had him a moose on the first day. about 20 min after we left camp i asked eric if he had all his licenses with him. the answer was everthing but the leh so we turned around and went back to camp.
while back at camp i went down to the lake and let out a series of moose calls to mess with my partner. wellthe response was immediate but from the wrong direction! holy sh$t there's a moose right behind camp. that moose started in and for a while i thought that we were gonna smoke a moose right behind my buds camper! unfortunately he must have winded camp and shut up. no banana that morning lol.

Totally awesome first season. A dream to most for their first. Congrats.

Is it just me or does it seem like a lot of posts this year on first this and that are totally incredible and awesome. My boy turns 12 next year and is going to do the CORE test with another young relative. Hope they have the "Luck" that some have had this year:D.
