Had the time of my life hunting with my family this year. Never killed a single animal myself but I can say this season was the best season of my life. I was guide, skinner, and packer and I had an absolute blast.

Here is the first kill of the fall, my 12 year old son, Cody's youth season muley buck.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v145/BCBOY/Sept6010a.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v145/BCBOY/Sept6023a.jpg

Cody then killed his 2nd deer of the season, a youth season muley doe.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v145/BCBOY/P9100042a.jpg

The next day, he killed his 3rd and final deer of the season, a youth season whitetail doe. He killed all 3 deer in one week of hunting.

Awesome Dana, nice to see him getting out and enjoying what it's all about. Spending time with dad in the woods. No shortage of prime eating meat this winter.

After we got Cody tagged out on deer, it was time to focus on his mountain goat tag. This hunt was by far one of the highlights of the season. Cody was able to get er done on his first day goat hunting. It took me 7 tags over 14 years to accomplish this. Here are some pics of his first goat.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v145/BCBOY/Sept20020a.jpg

Here we are packing out the goat in our packs. Was a good grunt, but Cody trained all summer for it and he did just fine packin much of the deboned meat himself.

The next day we thought we were going to take it easy and just hunt some bush chickens, turned out we ran into this monster black bear and Cody hammered it. This is his second 6 foot plus bear in 2 years.

Next on the list was moose. Both Cody and my dad had Limited Entry tags for the same area. We were able to get my dad on a really good 44 inch bull. It died in an absolute hellhole. I had to skin and quarter and debone the bull and then we packed it out on our backs. Cody did 8 trips with over 50 lbs in his pack per trip. I was very impressed with his packing abilities. While Cody wasn't able to connect on a bull, he definately won't ever forget this hunt with his grandpa. Since my dad has a major heart condition, it was pretty darn special to return the favor and be his skinner and packer after all the times he did it for me when I was younger. Even though getting that bull out was a ton of work, I would gladly do it again.

Nice old M99 Savage Dana, looks like an early model with the sliding safety on the lever and most of the bluing worn off. What caliber is it? I'm a big fan of those, I have one 1928 vintage, 250/3000 cal. It was originally my Dad's, then he sold it and I went and bought it back when I was 14, still got it. I shot my first deer with it, my son and my daughter shot their first deer with it and now it's my grandson's turn.

Great pictures, great season, way to get the youngun's involved. I recognize your Dad from someplace, maybe BCWF conventions...??? What do you think?

Jagermeister

Cody is sure getting some mileage out of that old Savage 99. I guess it would be fair to say that the boy is hooked for life, it appears that it is family tradition.

My son got his picture taken with "Santa" the other day and he asked for a new hunting shirt so he can go hunting again with "Daddo"

Now that's one happy boy and a proud father and grandfather! Great job in showing your son the ways of the wild! What I would have sacrificed to have those experiences as a youngster. I have to comment about Cody harvesting a mountain goat at 12 years old - Holy Crap!!! Now it's time to get my boy a rifle . . . he's almost 5.

You sure are lucky Cody to have a dad that is this dedicated to hunting and taking the time to hunt with you and the rest of his family.

Big congrats dana on the fine year. And nice to see another great post.

When one has as negative a year as I, it's refreshing to be able to share the success of others.

Huge congrats to Cody on a year of great 1st's and I'm sure he'll have allot more in the future. Nothing better enjoying our resources with family and passing down the generations of knowledge. Just curious if your daughter is looking forward to be apart of it all in the future?

You know what? KUDOS to you Dana!!!
You are doing what every father should do and introducing your son to an awesome lifestyle. I guarantee you wont be picking him up at the cop shop or catching him doing drugs and other stupidity when his in his teens.
He is lucky to have his dad spend that kind of time with him and you are lucky to have your son want to enjoy spend the time with you.
So congratulations and Merry Christmas.

Looks like you had a great season...It is great to see young people grow up with a love of the outdoors, as compared to other activities that they could become involved in...

Dana, thanks for sharing your photos of the season - you and your children - your family are an inspiration in the hunting community to show what this special sport is about and why people do it - it is all about sharing and family unity and teaching our future (our children) that there is more to life than electronics, hanging about town, causing mayhem - it is about getting out and experiencing the good things that bring memories of lifetimes to pass on to new generations

thank you for always sharing a little of your history, your present and your future with us here on HBC

congratulations to all of you :)

Thanks for the nice comments. This truly has been a season I will cherish forever.

To answer some questions, Cody's Model 99 is a 300 Sav. He is the 4th generation of our family to hunt with it. She is a family heriloom. If she could talk, man just think of the stories she could tell.
The sling I have on my rifle in the one goat packin pic is a Booniepacker sling. My buddy gave me the sling last season. It is a nice way to pack a rifle. I highly reccomend it.
As for my season, we had tuff conditions for late season muleys. But, that seems to be par of the course for the last 10 years or so. Most years we don't get snow till well after the rut. That means the deer are scattered from high to low and everywhere in between. It really can be frustrating for a timber hunter with the snap, crackle, pop conditions. But I've learned that if you conquer the head game, you can still have success. With having the freezer very full this year, I knew I probably wasn't going to kill a buck because I was going to be very very picky. I saw plenty of legal bucks, just never saw one that turned my crank and made me wanna cancel my tag. The more I eat tag soup, the better it tastes.

SSSter,
LMAO! Notice how the Recruitment Camp are the ones that haven't posted here yet? How dare I show other dads that hunting with your kids is the best way to recruit hunters. LOL!

My daughter is definately keen to give her brother a run for his money. She had her Jr. Licence this year and was hoping to get her first grouse. Was a bad year for chickens. Just too wet this summer and the crop was very low. She can't wait for next year and is hoping the chicken hunting will be better. Will probably do some bunny hunting with both them this winter. Good way to learn trackin skills in the snow by chasing a ol' buck hare. They are smart as a big ol' muley and will double back on ya and such. Not the easiest to hunt in the thick stuff, but should teach them some good skills.

Dana Congrats to you and Cody it was a great year for both you guy's.
Need an update thought because this ain't the Kifaru Tent , how did it treat you guy's this fall?

The Kifaru treated us well on our back pack trips this summer. I love it. I really wanted to do a late season solo backpack hunt with it, but work got busy and I had pretty much burned all my time off early in the season. I do have plans to do a winter trip or 2 with it and giver a try in some extreme conditions.
As nice as the Kifaru is, I'll still use the walltent for cooler weather family camping. It is nice having a fire that will burn all night and having a comfy cot to sleep on.

Great photos. I'm still trying to find out how the hell you're able to post such good ones from a dial up service no less. I think you should put a pic on the site of that little ornament that's in the corner of your living room.:-P

Posting up pics with dial up just proves I'm a very patient man.

SSSter,
LMAO! Notice how the Recruitment Camp are the ones that haven't posted here yet? How dare I show other dads that hunting with your kids is the best way to recruit hunters. LOL!

Hey Dana, I think lots of us believe in recruitment, your way works just fine, so does the other way, there is more then one way to skin a cat, neither camp should be trashing each other IMO.

I agree. Maybe you can tell that to Fisherdude and the great example he has set as a Fed member when he told me I am F##kin the hunting for my kids. The Recruitment camp have done more against recruitment than they could ever imagine. To steal GG's words, They have Sunk Ships.
With their constant attacks on the internet against those that may have differing views, they have backed people in a corner and guess what, the cat puts up a fight. I have told them this again and again, but they seem intent on destroying their own agenda.
Meanwhile, guys like me and my brother, carry on instilling in our kids a love and a desire for the outdoors and the hunt. Maybe if they had kids of their own, they would see the value in that.

To who this may concern ,last year I had a blow up with one of my hunting partners ,he was going to leave camp :frown:.

I said to him after things cooled down ,lets just forget what was said we are so close to getting an elk..

He said to many bad things have been said.

I said well I am a forgiving person and I will put what happened behind me.

He walked away and thought about it and came back to me and said ,you are quit a person Wayne and I respect you for what you are and we shook hands .

And yes he did get his bull elk the next day ,sometimes it is better to forget and go on http://www.huntingbc.ca/forum/images/icons/icon7.gif .

That is exactly how it should be. Life is too short to dwell on squabbling and negativities. It’s also bad for your health.;-)

Great pictures and lots of great memories.I feel that there is a lot of guys on this site that also have great pictures but are hesitant to post them because they might not live up to the standards of some of you so called ''trophy hunters" calling peoples deer rats or dinks shows a great disrespect for the sport and the game we are harvesting. The hunt is what it is all about ,the friendships the camps, enjoying the great outdoors the kill is just the icing on a great cake.I have more respect for a guy who shoots a spike deer and is truly excited and happy than a guy who shoots a nice four point and looks disappointed in the photo because the tines arent as long as he had hoped for.

Awesome pics and stories. I took my daughter hunting this year and she loved it. We are planning more trips next year. My little dude is only two so I have a bit to wait before I take him hunting...

Dana what did you get Cody for footwear? My daughter is 10 and I have been trying to find decent boots for here? Hunting gear for kids is pretty limited so most of her stuff so far is from Valhalla Pure...

Mcrae555,
Cody has actually been wearing my old Lowa Sheep Hunters. I bought a new pair this year and he inherited my old pair. If his feet grow more this year, I've got a pair of vintage Heads that he should fit. I picked them up at Value Village for a couple bucks. I also picked up a pair of vintage Pierre Paris this year at a garage sale. Both pairs of boots are in prime top-notch shape. I am always looking at used boots and if I see something that will fit one of us, I buy them. Some real good deals out there if you keep your eyes open.

I hope we have as much fun together hunting as you guys did. Congrats to you both. And if you have any tips for youth season areas for us we'll take it.

Why would you say that these pic make you a bad ass trophy hunter Dana ???? :???:.

My thoughts are is that any one out there can hunt the way they like to as long as it is done in a legal way.

If it is a spike you shoot or holding off for a wall hanger or other so be it it does not make anyone a bad ass hunter.

We all have that choice and no one should hold any offense to this kind of hunting we chose to do.
There are so many members that adore your hunting methods on this site and I am one of them ,I respect you for what you do as a hunter and a dad as for your children.

You should be proud of who you are on what you represent on this forum ,thats my thoughts http://www.huntingbc.ca/forum/images/icons/icon14.gif http://www.huntingbc.ca/forum/images/icons/icon7.gif.

Yes, it is, if you're thinking of the frontman for Guns n Roses.

Axle Rose is the mechanic at the Clearwater gas station.

We are all entitled to an opinion and I personally agree with and hunt the 4 point seasons.
