I really like going out and finding whitetail and mule deer antlers. I went on an elk hunt this year and had a great time and i want to go hiking around for elk sheds. I know where to go but i dont know when elk drop there antlers? I know its in the spring but is it closer to christmas or later?Any help would be appriciated! thanks

i,m sure some wiser folks can give you a better timeline for the elk shedding.i do know that it is much later than the deer. well into the springtime for elk on the island.

A couple years ago I was around Nanaimo lakes and ran into a small heard of Elk in April and a couple small bulls still had there antlers.I would suspect they would drop them by May at least, when the new vegetation starts to come up and there is lots of feed.

I've seen bulls large and small porting racks well into february and early march. I've seen a series of photos (like animation if you flip through fast) of an elk bull throwing his antlers. There was only patches of snow in the photos so my guess would be aprilish

Where you at hunter? Up here in the N.E., just find the herds and keep an eye on them. ANYTIME after Christmas, let the horn hunting begin. But on average, alot of the bulls drop Feb/ Mar and into April.

hey hunter1993,,,,here in the Kootenays whilst turkey hunting 95% of the bulls still had head gear. while shed hunting last year saw quite a few with antlers in May and we also found quite a few sheds.

I live on the island ,but I have gone to Princeton a few times in the spring time.
Almost every second time I do go to Princeton I see elk anywhere past the Whipsaw turn off where the 4 lanes begin.

If I was you the one place I would look for elk sheds is.

Go up to the first turn off to your right on the whipsaw the turn off to your right is almost right down at the hi way on the whipsaw.

Head up there about 1/3 of a K ,then start looking anywhere along this area and up.

Yep. Seen then still packing while spring bear hunting in early April.
