Wolves vs. Coyotes

I was out looking for whitetails yesterday and snuck up on a dog within 20 yards. By the time he noticed me I was prone with my scope on him. He just stared at me for a few minutes until I moved, then he bolted away. I dont hunt predators, not enough steak on them for my liking...:biggrin:

Is there an easy way to ID a wolf? I live in region 3 and run across my fair share of yotes, but this one looked a little different. Grayer, very thick hide, his head was roundish with what looked like a fine mane of hair. His tail had white on the tip.

Both are open in Region 3. Pull the pin then ID:wink:.

Just make sure you're not hunting near a residential area.

They are very distinguishable once you've seen one of each....

Have you really seen a yote with a collar?!? I saw one in Region 3 last year and my hunting buddy said I was on crack.
Do you have any info about why they are tracking them?

I thinks he is refering to a Fido collar(i.e. man's best friend) when checkin for collars near habatation

The area we whack yotes in is fairly inhabited so ya gotta watch ya don't shoot somebodys dog. K

I'd go for size, the few wolves that I've seen have been double the size of a yote and grayer so it was pretty obvious, but colour doesn't mean anything I don't think. The last one I saw a couple of weeks ago his shoulder would have been to my hip, pretty bloody big and he didn't have a pack around so I guess he was a big loner male.

the average coyote is in the 20-35 lb range, the average wolf is 75-100 lbs

A lot more Wolf sign this year in the Kamloops area than I have ever seen.

There eyes and ears ,feet ,tail will tell you what you want to know about a wolf.

There ears are short and there eyes are slanted upward and the paws are big and the tail is bushy.

A coyote runs with it's tail down. a wolf is much larger, as a rule, and runs with its' tail up. We're just starting to get a good (?) showing of wolf in this area.

And a yote has a distinct 'trot' to it's stride.
Wolves are generally much more solid and thick looking in comparison.

I think it was a wolf then because it was running in circles in the bushes and all i saw was his tail in the air.
