I have a friend in Squamish who just started hunting, so he calls me up and says "I've seen lots of sign in this one place outside of town, come and help me find a buck" So I head out very early in the AM, to meet at an arranged spot.

I get this call on my cell phone when I am almost there. Buddy has been called in to work, he will meet me if he can get off. I am like "WTF?? I don't know where I am going" But he gives me directions and I figure what the heck, I am here anyway, so I'll give it a shot.

I glassed this clearing that he found for a few hours, and then was going to go try somewhere else, when I decided to try my new doe bleat can, purchased for the princely sum of $19 or so.

Almost instantly, I hear a grunt. No way!!

I keep at it, and there are more grunts, coming closer. I finally see some movement in a thick patch of willows, about 50 yards away.

The astonishing thing is that the wind is totally in his favour, it's at my back!! I bleat once more, and get ready.

He comes out of the willows and I am conflicted- He is no monster, but hunting has been tough this year...He makes the choice for me as he keeps getting closer and closer, and when he gets under 30 yards I feel the cat gave the mouse every sporting chance to get away, and the mouse can only run in front of the cat so many times...

He turns broadside and I plop the crosshairs behind the shoulder and touch off my 300WSM, sending a 130gr TTSX @ 3500 FPS.

He takes a step or 2 forward, then falls backward in a heap.

I just ate some of him for dinner and he was deliscious. I made the right choice!

He is a 3x3 with double brow tines. Pretty cool looking, it would have been great to see him in a few years, I bet he had great potential!

Using the can takes extreme skill:cool:

Well, just liek rattling and any calling, several factors have to work for you. Mostly a buck in the rut has to be within earshot- And he has to pay more attention to his little brain than his nose!

Congratulations gatehouse that sounds like it worked perfectly. That little bleat can is one handy toy, I also use mine when deer bust me, I roll it over and they usually stop and sometimes settle right back down.

You owe 3/4's of that deer to the fella that provided the spot. It ain't his fault he got called in.

Do the right thing...

Nice buck Clarke!

Who would have thought ten tears ago that you would choose to pass on Pemberton to pinch a buck out of the Squamish area; what has the world come to?

If you just shot it yesterday, has your bullet come to rest yet?

Seriously, that is some screaming fast ammo - is it handloads or the Hornady factory loads? The Hornady website shows that bullet and calibre combination @ 3500 fps and I might like to try them out in my T3. All you Barnes-buddies have me thinking about trying them again.

If those are Hornady, where did you buy them? I can't find them on either the Cabelas Canada or WSS websites.

Thanks in advance for pointing me in the right direction.

I should have expected that answer:lol:

I don't have the time I used to to handload - I haven't even bought the dies for my .300 WSM yet.

I don't feel the urgency to load for this rifle as I would have 15 years ago as there are so many decent factory loads with premium bullets out there to choose from today.

I have had excellent results at the range - but only one animal shot - with Winchester Supreme 150 grain BST.

I am intrigued by your choice of such a light bullet for the .300 WSM; years ago I chose to try 130 grn XBTs and later 125 grn NBTs in my .300 Savage 99. The factory loads come only in 150 and 180 grn bullets which baffles me when the short neck of this cartridge barely allows for seating of larger bullets. I found the lighter bullets produced great ballistics and extended the range of this rifle for deer-sized animals.

I was hoping some possible positive feedback on the Hornady ammo, especially in a lighter bullet, would offer me a short-cut to trying out the new generation Barnes bullets which are so enthusiastically endorsed on this site, as the old ones turned me off years ago.

I guess I'll have to ask someone who isn't such a purist.

Federal also loads the 130 gr TTSX in their Vital Shock Hyper velocity ammo. When you see the price of it, you will go buy dies for your WSM

Great deer..

I use the can and got my last buck, on other trick I used while I was out east was to blow threw the can from the bottom it gives you the ability to make louder and softer calls, the grunt also helps

Clark most hunters would give there left hand for a buck like the one you just shot ,I agree with Kenny on what he said ,you are spoiled with the buck you got last year ,this buck you got is a very nice deer with the antlers to go with it http://www.huntingbc.ca/forum/images/icons/icon12.gif.

Thanks Clarke, informative thread.

Also, thanks TB. It was Federal Vital Shock I was considering with the 130 grn TTSX, Hornady uses their own bullets and they don't even make .300 WSM ammo.

I got my ammo confused as I was also looking for loads for my son's 7mm-08 and was interested in the Hornady light magnum 139 grn SST which advertises a significant muzzle velocity increase over the Federal Vital Shock 140 grn Accubond he is shooting now.

I won't hijack this thread any further - nice buck, nice ammo Clarke.
