I thought you guys would like to hear about my goat hunt this fall. I went out 3 times for my goat between Nov 9-15.

Nov 9

The weather was absolutely beautiful after a stretch of crappy weather I spotted over 30 goats and put a stalk on two goats one of which looked like a billy. They were really low on the mountain so I hoped to be able to see them from the bottom of the slide. When I got there I couldn't see them because of the slope of the mountain so I stalked up the timber on the edge of the slide I got up to where I figured they would be and cut over to the bottom of the rock bluff but they were gone they must have smelled me because there is no way they saw of heard me. When I got back down I was able to see them much higher on the bluff now totally inaccessable and one more to the right from where I was that I didn't see earlier. I saw other goats but I would have had to come down in the dark if I had gotten one and since I went solo I decided not to push my luck. It was a wonderful day.

Nov 11

I went solo again and the day was foggy with a bit of drizzle. I went up a different spot where I had seen one small goat and two other bigger ones. I climbed up the timber on the right side of this slide. It was steep, brushy with a lot of big wind fall so it took an hour and a half to get up to where I had seen the goats two days before I cut out to the slide and I saw nothing so I climbed up further in the alders all of a sudden there was a goat beside me less than 20 yards away! It must have been sleeping in the alder patch. It turned out to be a small nanny so I put down my gun and got out my camera. I took some photo's and video which we try to post later. When the goat finally left I went up a few yards higher to watch it's progress and I saw it had joined up with an average billy and they were now innacessable. Another great day with 3 goats spotted.

Nov 15

This time BCbillies was able to go with me. We saw about 11 or 12 goats and saw two adult goats in the same spot where I had gone on the 11th. The fog was giving us a lot of trouble, one of the goats looked like a nanny but we couldn't get a read on the other one which was a mature animal. Aftr an hour or more of waiting We decided that we should go up there and get a better look. We went up the left side of the slide this time which was much better than the right side. It turned out that the bigger animal was an average billy. We got to within what turned out to be 80 yards of the billy and I was able to drop it with one shot with my 264 Win Mag using 130 gr Swift Scirrocco bullets started at a bit over 3200 fps. It then started to slide down the slope and dissapeared into the fog, I thought this might not be very pretty when we find him. In the end he went about 1/2 a kilometer down total distance. Originally it stopped in a bad spot in the creek but after I got my rope out and looked up and it was gone! It had been in that spot about 30 minutes before we got over to him. Good thing he moved because I was going to get really wet otherwise. It went about 100 more yards and stopped in a much better spot. In the photo the first spot he stopped is just below the waterfall near the top of the picture. I almost forgot it was a 5 year old billy with 8 3/4 inch horns.

In the end it was quite an enjoyable hunt and I am happy with how it turned out. We will try to post some more video and pictures later. Thanks to BCbillies for all his help.

Here's a quick vid of the goat in the waterslide. I would have had some great video of gerrygoat in the creek freeing the goat but it just wasn't meant to be . . . at least not this time!

Gerry, great lookin hide on that goat, even though it's all wet! I'm glad you were able to take one down...too bad I wasn't there to help you pack the meat down so I could return the favor from my goat hunt!! Oh well, there's always next year, and I know where there's a big goat waiting for us!!

BCBillies, another successful goat hunt eh? Is that a baker's dozen for you this year? Maybe we'll still get another chance this winter to try to tag one out for you!

Man, that was some awsome goat hunting! BCbillies is a great guy to help people out. Gave me a lot of good information on goat hunting. I didnt make it out this year, even though I have an LEH. Work just didnt allow it. Too bad, because that hunt looks wicked! Good job guys!!!

Congrats Gerry on a great looking goat. Being an ex - Terracite I'm pretty sure I recognize that slide and waterfall. Man, good on you for even tackling that range.

From looking at the pics, you look very familiar, I think we used to work together for a roofing company say about 15 years ago.

A great trophy indeed.

He was 8 3/4 " in length but carries the mass he does have quite well so looks a bit bigger than he really is. I am always happy when I take a mature billy regardless of horn size though.

I have the greatest respect for those mountains . . . and goats! There are a few good reasons I have stayed away from those particular mountains for many years - it is rather unforgiving territory with an over abundance of thick brush, vertical cliffs, smooth rock and lots of slide activity. This trip was a very enjoyable experience and went as well as a goat hunt could in this local. The last time Gerrygoat and I ventured out together in these mountains was 17 years ago and then it took a turn for the worse in a hurry  . . . although the airlift out was welcome! This was my first return trip and I think the monkey is off my back.

BTW - here is another brief clip showing the goat in the waterslide. After the goat slid hundreds of yards down the mountain and ended up here we said "OH BOY".

BCBillies, another successful goat hunt eh? Is that a baker's dozen for you this year? Maybe we'll still get another chance this winter to try to tag one out for you!

Four days after the "waterslide billy" TSW and I go for what I termed the "last chance" hunt. In many regards this hunt was quite different and we put in our best single day goat hunting effort since the Nov 2005 "23 hour special". For once the weather was in our favour, however, some other factors were not including the deep snow. We went deep up the valley and climbed a good distance up the mountain and were on the trail of a good size single goat, however, it was not meant to be. In many regards this "last chance" hunt was a win-win for me as it was either going to end with a half mount billy for the wall or the consolation prize - a new Ruger 375 Alaskan! :-) Life is good . . . thanks guys for all the support (you know who you are) . . . the goat will have to wait till next year!

He's older and can still humble us on the mountain.
You know your in good shape if you can barely keep up with him!
