Well I have been wanting to try calling in coyotes for quite a while since I usually just shoot them when I see them. Everyone always talks of how addicting and exciting it is. I always thought really? Well after watching some Primos truth videos I got my interest going and decided to give it a try. Got into my first spot this morning just before daylight and waited a little for the sun. Kept hearing vehicles from the road above and though " I'm too close too the road this is silly, and cold, Why am I doing this?"

Well the sun came up so I tried some howls from a cheap little E-caller I bought the last time I thought of doing this. Waited a couple mins. More howls, then I tried my Primos "DogCatcher" maybe trick em into thinking some intruder is catching their food. No response. Magpie flies in, I contemplate shooting it, decide not to. Slight breeze from my left to right side. I am about to leave after maybe 10 mins (yes I can be impatient, especially when tired and chilly).

All of a sudden there is a god aweful racket going on and I am like "WTF?? or yeah were yote hunting, must be one." The Coyote keeps on barking and letting out short little howls, now I am getting excited. But it takes me a bit to find the little bugger even though he's only about 80-100yrds directly in front of me. To the right of the dead pine in this pic when I shoot at him.......

And I believe I missed him! Yes I know he was right there, but I was getting pretty worked up. He took off to my left as I worked the bolt for another shot but was out of sight. So I worked the "DogCatcher" best I could and then hit the "Pup Yelps" on my cheapo caller. Right here I am not very happy with myself:mad: Couple seconds go by and I hear the little bugger off to my left. Then I spot him as he barks nd snarls at me from between the trees on the next ridge over in this pic......
http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r131/LeverActionJunkie/100_1400.jpg

I shoot him again and ths time he yelps spins around, then goes down into the ravine between me and him and he is snarling and yelpin to beat all hell. I let out a Whooo. I can't believe how pumped I am over a flee bitten dog!!8-) I give him a couple min and hear a whole bunch of coyotes from across the valley start howling and barking........
http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r131/LeverActionJunkie/100_1404.jpg

I head over to wear I last heard the coyote and begin to look for him, up and down the gully. I begin finding old deer bones etc but no coyote....

http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r131/LeverActionJunkie/100_1403.jpg

I searched and searched but I couldn't find him. I began going way down the gully and up the other side but no luck so I tried the next gully over, and another one but couldn't find him.:mad: I was pissed. I shot a can I found lying on the hillside, worried my gun was off but nope, it was all me.:icon_frow

I did find this though all the way from Nova Scotia. Go figure!?!?!

I took a break and drove around looking for some grouse but they didn't want to play so I did a couple more sets. Here's my second one....

And my third one of the day. By this time the wind was blowing pretty good and swirling so I hiked out.

And here is reason enough to take out a few extra coyotes. This band had four yearlings with em. Very small but not to photogenic with the straight piped Cummins idleing:)

Its a rabbit squaller type of sound drives my old lady nuts. It's pretty easy to use as it has a rubber air chamber attached to basically a regular call. You just pull the air chamber in and out like an accordian and it sounds like somethings taking a round out of a little critter:):)

The truck was there in '06 when I walked the same area looking for Blue Grouse, so I guess nobody is looking for it. Must have been stolen or abandoned due to drunk driving, there's quite a few beer cans and bottles around it. The interior seats were removed, ignition looks like it was messed with but pretty well everything else is on it still. Chevy Vortec motor if you can figure how to get it out:) Probably still there cause it is about 200 or so yards down a very steep ravine.

sounds like a fun day, too bad you didnt get the yote. In the future you'll have more success if you keep at it! And try not to skyline yourself when picking your spot to sit :)

Thanks TB :oops: I appreciate it. I can see how that is pretty addicting especially when that little bugger was growling and barking at me like that. Pretty sure he wanted to mess me up good:) I think I might be hooked:biggrin:

you'll find once a coyote stops and begins to bark alot with short howls, the jig is up. If you can see him, shoot at him because most likely he will not come in any closer. He has busted you or knows something is up, and the barks is his warning, sort of like when a deer stamps its feet and snorts when they sense something wrong.

The difference between the warning barks and the challenge bark howl isnt alot but when they're challenging you its best to challenge them back to trigger their territorial side, sometimes it works sometimes not, every hunt is different and that is what is fun! :D

Thanks guys. I really wish that there was more open grassland/sagebrush country left. it is some of the best IMHO. Just to let you all know I did report the truck to the RCMP. They told me they would run a search and then get back to me.

Lever.

You have got to call the mounties and show them the truck...or at least let them know it's there. There are all kinds of missing persons reports out there, it may even have been involved in a crime and they have not recovered it yet. At least call them and let them know what you found. Trust me, it may be just the link they are looking for in an unsolved crime.

If you don't want to call. Drop me a PM with the details and I will call. I am in law enforcement if you would rather I call.

Thanks
Paul

I went to the RCMP today and they told me to call a # so I did. They are running a search. Guess I must be dense or something, I never thought too much of the truck, other than "must have been a heck of a ride". Hopefully if they are looking for it some good will come of it.

were you up tranquille road it looks like? I just started getting into coyote hunting, bought a call at wholesale the other day. My buddy got on near pritchard, and I tried there the other day with no luck.

Thanks Lever

Just going back and recalled the Clearwater murders of the Bentley family, and how something like an abandoned car car help solve a crime. Good for you for calling. I am surprised the they did not want to send out a car to check it out. Keep us posted.
