i want to make a pair of mittens out of deer hide. how do you tan the hide and get it soft. if you can help i would be very happy. thanks

cheapest but most time consuming is brain tanning. It gives a nice soft golden hide.

It takes a fair bit of effort though, but the only thing you have to actually buy is tools for fleshing (unless you have someone flesh it for you) and brains. Which as a hunter you probably have some access to.

I'm doing this right now. I'll tell you before you start, its a hell of a lot of work. But I don't have any special tools, just my knife. I don't know how it will turn out either.
