View Full Version : Scenario: which deer to shoot???

I don't know if anyone has posted this before, but here it goes.

Scenario:
Your out hunting for big buck. You come around the corner and you see 2 deer standing there waiting for you to shoot them. The first is a huge, world class trophy, perfect TYPICAL buck. The second is an equally awesome, giant NON-TYPICAL buck.

Both have huge spread, great mass, tines that are sky-high, (anybody drooling yet?) the non-typical is more prickly than a porcupine, and both deer have world record written all over them.

Since both bucks are of the same species, and you are only allowed to harvest 1 antlered deer of that species in that region, what do you do???

Do you take the Typical?
The non-Typical?
Or do u leave them both so they can continue to spread their genes around and you thank the Lord above that you at least got the opportunity see them?
(If you choose to leave them both, I hope you have a camera with you to at least shoot some pics, because no one will ever believe you anyways)

So? What's it going to be???

If it where me I would take the non typical.

This buck has already gave his jean pool in this area.
The other buck that was with him might have been his brother or his son.

Hmm I guess I gotta be first to say I'd drop the typical (mulie?) those big non typical frames are way more common but a record class typical .... might be once in your lifetime ...

Call me traditional, but IMO nothing beats a good ol' typical especially with world class horns on them.

Yep... I am with the minority. I would drop the giant typical in a heartbeat.

well first i would have to throw my underwear away , then i would have to re-learn how the trigger works on my gun, then if after all of that they were still standing there i would have to shake my head a few times to make sure it wasn't a dream.......what was the question again....oh yeah BANG down goes the trashy non typical.

Definately Non - typ , as mentioned before , he's probably already spread his awesome genes !!

11-16-2008, 11:12 AM
That is a tough question. I think I would just take whichever one I felt like shooting at the time and have no regrets, because how could you. I think I would most likely smoke the typical if I could hit him.

I'll use a lifeline and call a friend, with a tag, then shoot both. :-P

Shoot them both, gut out the furthest one frome the truck. Take them both home and stick the non gutted one in the freezer until next year.
Just kidding. I would kill the non typ in a heart beat!!!

I harvest the fattest of the two. Antlers are both wall hangers so no need to quibble. Take the fattest because he is the healthiest and therefore the best tasting of the animals. Stock that is 'on the mend' is always the best tasting.

I'd whip out my lap top and post a poll here to see what the consensus was. .. :-P

So far it's 7 votes for a typical and 14 for the non.

I'm undecided myself. But I would probally take the Typical since I forgot to mention that the Non-typical was a decoy. :p

if the shot opportunity was good on both, which I think was the initial intention, I'd take the Non Typical for sure.

X-2 I can't keep track..

I'd have to look over the N/T as some are sexier than others.
By then the deer would be gone & problem solved.

Very happy to see so many of you guys would shoot the nt. Get those ugly genes out of the pool.
I'd Shoot the nt, then spend the afternoon working the rack over with a hack saw and Dremmel tool to make it as typical as possible.;)
The pic is Photoshoped for sure I saw it in a calender at Crappy tire. All the bucks were "Buck of the month" previous then put in a different setting for a grand finally.

I would wait for them to start fighting for dominance. Then when thier horns interlocked and got stuck together I would go get a friend. Then I would get him to shoot the other one, but I would take the glory because I found them.

Bow Walker

I'd take the one that presents the best shot opportunity for my broadhead.

Horns don't mean a whole lot:roll: - it's the meat.
