View Full Version : My 1st ever Mulie, Reg 8

Story time:

Saturday morning, around 8:00 a.m..
I walked into a cut block where I had seen a 2 point the week before. There's snow on the ground and track everywhere! I sat next to a stump on a rock ledge that gave me a good view of the cut before me. I grunted, doe called, rattled and then waited. Nothing. After awhile it started to rain. Still nothing. I noticed the rain was washing my own boot tracks out and I figured I wouldn't be able to tell the difference between 10 min old deer track or a 5 hour old track.

I left my spot and decided to walk the skid trails. The rain subsided. After a short ways I came across a set of tracks that looked rather fresh. I noticed where the deer had steped in a puddle and had drawn mud up onto the snow and I could tell it was VERY fresh. Good size track too. I followed the track up the hillside as it angled back along the slope. Nice gentle grade. Every few feet I would stop and look. The trees in the block had grown to about 10 feet in height and where spaced in such a way that I could get up to a 50 yard view in some spots.

After about a 100 yards or so I saw what looked like Mulie hair between two trees. Looked thru the binos and saw a pair of legs and hooves but branches obscured the rest of the deer. I crouched down and saw eyes, nose and 2" worth of antler off head. "Yes. A buck! But how big?" Then the deer disappered. I grunted and a doe appears. Then the buck steps back in. The doe walks to my left and the buck follows. They both step into plain view. I could easily count 4 points as he was only about 30 yards away. I grunted again and he stops broadside. I leveled the crosshairs of the Bushnell 4500 elite mounted on my old British .303 just under his chin. Boom, it was all over. I walked up to him and saw a small 4 point (barely) off to my left looking very bewildered. I figure I just made his day too since he could now have that doe all to himself.

I drug him down the hill and caught up with .308Norma and ShedHunter. They assisted with the cleaning, loading and picture taking. Thanks guys!!!

The missing hair is from dragging him down the road too far. On last pic, you can't tell, but there is a Hunting B.C. sticker on the hat I am wearing.

Sweet deer. Would be a wall hanger for me. I got a small 3x4 today (story and pics soon) , but not the elusive typical 4 point like that! Great job.

I forgot to mention some measurements. He's 19 3/8" tall and 24 3/8" wide when we put a tape on him in the back of the truck.

thepitchedlink, you mention wolf, there was wolf, cougar, and grizzly track all over the place where I got this guy. A little unnerving to say the least. I talked to Tooley earlier today. He was in the same area today and saw that a grizzly had followed the trail I made when I drug him out and that there was nothing left of the gut pile this morning. That bear might just sit in that area now and wait for the next hunter to shoot something!

I guess for a first buck like this I should consider mounting him, but I'm not sure.

Ya sure. Just to the left of center, but not too far from the outside. And you have to come up from the bottom to get there. Does that help?
