Well I had a great season, hunted mulies right from opening day in September till Today. Seen lots of great country and some really good bucks.

The buck named "Vader" was the biggest one and would go in the 185" class. I hunted him every day for over a week. I seen him twice and both times too far for a shot. The snow actually messed me up and he moved and I was unable to relocate him. I will try and find him again next year.

I managed to find a spot where there was a high amount of deer activity and today my hunting partner Rattler and I headed out to give er a go.

Lots of fresh snow, weather was mild but not melting. A couple deer had already laid tracks in the snow right were I expected. We geared up and descented our clothes and threw on some deer urine as a cover scent and attractant. Rattler grabbed his calls and rattling antlers.

We walked into the first setup location and Rattler began calling.

Things happened quickly from here on in.

Probably less than 5 minutes

I hear a faint "snap" in the bush, pretty subtle but not normal.
Just as Rattler says "Doe" I see her.

Seconds after we see the doe we see the buck following her.

Tons of thoughts going threw my head while we watched him at 40 yards or so.
-Season closing on Nov 10th
-freezer conked out on me last year and lost half my moose and caribou, the meat would definitly be appreciated.
-Picture perfect rattling results
-Quality deer with a unique look, not my monster but still a shooter this close to the end of the season.

I let my finger make the decision and the 280 Ackley sung a beautiful song. He didn't take a step.

Here's how he lay

Congratulations. The character makes a person think that this buck has been around for a few years. Any idea on the age?

I guess the West Koots will be the new Clearwater now? Goes to prove that good mature bucks exist in all regions. It is how you hunt more so than where you hunt.

Best o luck to all those folks heading out for the November Long. Does highway #5 have a traffic jam on it yet? Perhaps after your post #3 will get some attention?

WOW thats great of Ken to donate another Job, he's got my whitetail and is just ordered the form for it:smile:

Now I know he's donated another I wish I would have shot a bigger buck. None of my bucks are big enough to shoulder mount yet but that is my primary goal in the upcoming years.

I will still monitor the auction and perhaps have to save it as a credit until I can get a mulie worthy of his talent:biggrin:

Region 3 is still producing bigger bucks and more of them. Lots of places in 3 are more wide open and easier to hunt. I don't recommend region 4 because everyone that comes here leaves disappointed because the bush is so thick. The only reason I hunt region 4 is because I have to, its home.....I seen more deer in Region 8 in one day then I did all season in Region 4, thats pretty sad. I also believe that all regions have good bucks, you just gotta spend the time and find them.

At a glance my partner figured he's 7 ish. His antlers would suggest older and they do look like they are on the decline but I'm no expert on aging and we haven't looked at the molars yet, I'll see them when I cape out the head today.
His nazal cavities are sunken pretty good.

Nice work Jeff, I know you hunt a lot and you earned him.
If you are caping him out, that tells me that you are doing a head mount, good call!

Nope I'm not going to mount him, I just like to save my capes. Seems like a waste to throw capes in the trash. Cape is already off him as he was skinned within a couple hours of the kill but its still attached to the skull so the detail work has to go down today.

Nice one! I think you made the right call.
And I agree with what you said about hunting the west kootenays, it can be frustrating because you know the deer are there, but you just don't see many. Now that the long weekend is here I don't like my chances of filling my tag... I already got beat to my spot by other hunters this morning.

Not very many really wide buck come out of this area, seems the heavy timber and thick underbrush has taken the toll and evolution has kept them on the tighter side.

Thats my theory anyhow and I'm sticking to it:lol:
