Headed out for a family hunting trip this past weekend. Went to an area that has traditionally been good during the rut even though its a bit early. My uncle ran across a nice four point and dropped him on minute ten of the first morning. Everyone else wasn't seeing much and very little sign. The next day we hiked with my cousin (first hunting trip) into a basin and found a pocket of deer including 5 bucks (three 4 points) and about 12 does and fawns. Two of the does were being chased. We performed a marathon hike to get in position across a ravine from where the biggest buck was moving and when he stepped out my cousin made a good shot on his first buck.

Beauty buck from some beauty country!

Sometimes I wonder why god made whitetails when you see a mule buck like this....
Sometimes I wonder why a hunter chases whitetails in jungles when there is beauty country like this.....

Congrats to your cousin on his first! He'll remember this one for a long time.

Awesome buck. One problem with that being his first, it will probably take another ten years to get something like that again. Well done.

So read and heed. All these hunter's comments can't be wrong.
Find a Taxidermist ASAP.

Great buck, huge congrats.
enjoy the high.......he'll appreciate it even more over time, once he spends the time, many many many miles, and LOTS of money spent trying to get one even close to as nice as that.

Thanks everyone, he's definitely a happy camper, I'll have to show him this thread and it'll really sink in what he's got. I would hate for him to think its the norm on any trip!
This hunt taught me one really important lesson. We were in a great looking area but out of the first two days I saw only a handfull of deer and next to no sign. We kept at it and turned over every rock moving further and further back from the easy access areas and finally found the magic basin. This reafirmed the importance of persistence for me. After the first two days I was pretty discouraged as were the others, some guys even stayed in camp because he thought there was no chance of finding any deer. They were kicking themselves I'll tell ya, they could'a shot one of the other four points.

Holy shit! I have hunted for 40 years and never even seen one like that! Wow.

If that buck was taken where I think it was, judging by the landscape picture, I can assure you that there are quiet a few like him and better still running around.;-)
