Yesterday my Dad was able to get his Region 3 meat buck on the last weekend of any buck season! It was a neck shot from a kneeling position because a deadfall was concealing the bulk of his lungs, heart, and liver. He dropped like a stone!
We were almost to a spot where we were going to walk into positions overlooking a vast block, where we could do some glassing in the warm non-windy sunny mid morning. However, the deer beat us to our spot so we took advantage of this road hunt.
We had checked my Dad’s sight in on Friday morning and my Dad knew
where the now 44 year old gun(.308 norma mag shooting 180 gr Swift A-Frames)would put a bullet up to 300 or so yards; assuming my Dad was cool in the sighting and draw. We got the point of impact just above 2” at 100 yards.
I had first seen the deer and later three others(one a doe) and was
fussing a little about how long my Dad took to make the shot, and at which deer, but the little buck was not spooked and he waited for just the right moment to squeeze the trigger. The "target" was not very big in the 4x scope. He was looking right at us when the round went down range. He didn’t get the scope on any other buck but I saw a nice wide forked 2 point move into my binos-before the shot-and I whispered ‘Dad there's another buck behind and to the left of the spiker‘! Take him, take him! The 2 point began to nibble and then he moved slowly from our left to right and out of view. Ahhhh! Put simply my Dad took what was on offer to him.
Because there was a sizeable ravine with deadfalls between the downed deer and the road, after field dressing, we cut him in two and I made two trips to pack him out.
A weather system pushed in from the coast Friday night which led to a significant wind chill factor on Saturday. In fact, we only got to climb a knob and come down on some bedded deer from uphill but no buck there. They were bedded down in the sun and in the lee of the wind.
We saw our first wolf ever in the area on Saturday morning. He didn’t waste time booking it away from us ASAP! We managed to take in a Dipper feeding for nymphs along the shoreline of a lake as well as Pine Grosbeaks loading up their gizzards! All in all a super weekend!
