Allison is a new hunter with one deer to her credit and we were hoping to get her a moose.
We hunted hard every day and saw a fair number moose and a few caribou. We spotted a small herd on the mountain across the valley so the next day we headed up there. The caribou were still there, but unfortunately the bull wasn't legal.Had a great day anyways.
Dad was in charge of hunting the lake shore and fishing. He caught and released some big Dollies.Kept a few rainbows for dinner.
We found some mushrooms to cook with the trout.Delicious!
Finally on the last day Allison and I were hunting in the old burn behind camp.We split up and were going to meet on the mountain side.Someone back by the lake fired a shot and Allison thought it was me,so she was hoofing it back down the mountain when I saw her.She was pretty disappointed that it wasn't me shooting. It was about 3:00 by now and I suggested we head up the mountain for a bettor vantage point and glass for a couple hours then call it a trip.
We started up the hill and i glassed the far edge of the burn and there about 1.5 miles away was a nice bull.I set up the spotting scope and Allison was watching when I let out a loud cow call." he's looking right at me" she said.In he came.
I sent Allison down wind onto a ridge about 300 yds away and she got a birds eye view of the bull coming in.1 hr later he came out of the bush about 300 yds below her and stood behind a pine tree without moving for about 1/2 hr.Finally he moved and then I could see him as well.I wanted Allison to shoot so I took my time getting ready. Finally BOOM,BOOM and down he went. She waited as long as she could as well because she wasn't sure of the distance and wanted me to be ready.
Allison had her first moose and was she ever excited! It was about 4:40 by now and we were 3 miles from the lake.We de-boned the meat and hiked most of the way out by headlamp.
We had spotted a grizzly on the mountain side that morning and when I was waiting for the moose to come in he showed up on the hillside bellow me.What a beauty.
