Plugging shotgun magazine.

I'm going to bring my shotgun along today while deer hunting in case some geese fly over. First time I have had a pump shotgun..

For plugging the mag. It has to be 2 + 1 for 3" shells correct? If I can put three 2.75" shells that is still ok, as long as I cannot put more than two 3" shells in the mag?

Although I can fit three 2.75" shells, it is still illegal to do so? or am I allowed to hunt with more than 2+1 if I use a smaller shell?

Nope...Have to plug it so that it only holds two 2 3/4" shells. However if you do it right you can still fit two 3" shells in.

You may only have 2 shotshells in the mag regardless of length.

My shotgun came plugged and I can fit two 3” and 3.5” shells or two 2.75” shells. It will not accept three 2.75” shells. I tried it. To answer you question, having three 2.57" shells in the magazine is illegal. If your plugged shotgun can accept three 2.57" shells I would put an aditional plug in the mag just to be on the safe side in case a CO happens to cross your path and checks your gun. It happened to me a week ago while grouse hunting.

i built a plug out of a chunck of 1/2" copper pipe i had laying around. Wrapped the ends in duct tape so it wouldnt mark anything up. Works great.

You're right, when hunting migratory birds only 2 shells are allowed in the mag but there are instances where you can have more.

Actually it seems the regs changed this year. It now states you must have the gun plugged unless you are using slugs. Buckshot, lead #6, steel BB .. doesn't matter has to be plugged.

Yep, that's right, hunting big game or trapping is an instance where you can have more than two shells in the mag.
