Well it finally happened. My brother in law finally got his first deer (animal) ever! He has been hunting with me for 2 seasons now, and last year he had some chances and even passed up on a buck because we were moose hunting.
It all started with a Tim Hortons coffee and a breakfast sandwich to go. We have our location planned out to where we wanna go first thing in the morning. It's perfect timing, about 10 minutes before shooting light we turn down the road to our spot but to our avail a HUGE camp is set up right beside a clearing where we have shot 2 moose in the past 3 years. (oh ya I forgot to mention we were moose huntin ) At this point we are pretty dissapointed but truck along to our second spot. By now its shooting light and we go for a little walk. Nothing seen at all but lots of coyotes barking in the distance. After about a 30 minute hike we jump back in the truck and cruise down the road to a spot where we got a moose last year. As we are driving, I look out to the left and spot this little guy poking his head out of the timber line at about 100 yards. My brother in law gets out, kneels down, and I told him to take his time and take the shot whenever. 3 seconds later BOOM. The 300 ultra magnum goes off like a cannon and the deer buckles on the spot. He turns to me and I shake his hand, but he didnt know if he got it becasue it dropped so fast. We walked down the the animal to find that he hit in the neck, through the spine and out behind the left shoulder. It was a great experience for all, and now all we need is to get that moose we were lookin for.
