After receiving the BIG HORN draw in the Ashnola and hiking 19km over 3 days without seeing sheep,my confidence was deteriorating. We(myself and the young fella)did manage to see about 30 sheep on day 4 and 5 but no legal rams.Well,we did come home with some fond memories and the youth hunt was just around the corner.
I spend time with 2 young fella's,as it was there dad that originally showed me the ropes, and now that the boys are getting older(17&19),and have there dad's desire to hunt,it is now my pleasure to show them what I have learned. This year I decided to hunt the later part of the youth season and run it into the general open season(Princeton area,4-point season). We spent the first couple days hunting in extreme heat and hardly seen a doe,let alone a buck. Our luck changed on the 9th,last day of youth season,as we seen our first buck,a two point that was more than willing to be patient,BOOM!,and the younger(Wes) of the two has meat in the freezer. On the way back to the cabin, the younger had to make a comment about harvesting that 1 more deer than his brother. The challenge was on,but remember it's now 4-point season. My hunting partner arrived the night of the 9th,for opening day,and we decided that he would hunt with the younger of the 2 boys and I would head out with the older(Muddog). We had only seen the 1 buck in the first 3 days, but we would not abandon hope,we left at dark and seen a couple does at first light,we followed them into a cut and low and behold 3 more deer,2 does and a buck.Strange looking buck, let me concentrate with the binnoculars, what's the deal here,2 main beams on one side, what's up,hold tight, now he turns ,small 4 point on the other side, hold tight, let me double check this bugger, yep,he's legal, take you're time,Boom!2 bucks in the freezer for the boys and an apology owed from the younger brother.
The other night we had another young couple over for dinner,we have spent alot of time with the young lady(17)over the years, and were getting the opportunity to meet her new boyfriend(19),who had recently received his hunting lisc. and with only 1 hunt under his belt, and myself having mounts and pictures in my office,I could tell he wanted an opportunity to harvested his first animal. The next morning I received an e-mail from the young lady(Candace, who means the world to me),inquiring if I was going hunting again soon, and if I would take Ryan?It was any buck season, and it is truly about kids,so we were on our way last week, where we managed to get Ryan his first grouse and a buck(small 2 point).
I passed on a small 4 point and we did see a small herd of cow elk last week,it has been a memorable start to the year, and my time will come.
