I hunt with open sights to 100 yards mostly with a 45/70 caliber.
Yardage and accuracy depend on the shooter. I know others with my caliber
shoot to 200 yards and those with tang sights shoot even farther. What is your skill level and a distance you are sure about that determimes the distance. Some people it's just 50 yards it all depends on you.

My rifles are scoped but also have iron sights,I would`nt own a smooth barrel gun.mess up your scope and you are screwed,My best shot with sights was a Dawson Creek mulie at 220 yards, real difficult cause the front sight almost covered the whole deer.I would rather not do that again!

thats why i like the old weaver mounts if your scope breaks in the woods or somthing you can just flip it up and use the open sights

I've seen some itty bitty groups shot at 300 meters with aperture sights. But most open sights on hunting rifles are not as precise. I would try it out, and see how you do. You'll probably find you are fine out to 100 metres, or farther, for deer sized stuff.

I shoot open sights with my 30-30. I would say MY comfort would be 100 yards. But everyone is different and every situation is different too.
