View Full Version : Region 2: Lower Mainland-some big game?

----- Region 2: Lower Mainland ----- the populous area lol.
Region 2 is one of the smallest in the province holds some good water fowling and some big game hunting
but difficult access, compounded by special shooting regulations in various municipalities, can be discouraging to hunters. Always check firearms restrictions b4 planning to shoot or hunt.
Altho coastal black tail deer and black bear are quite abundant all through the Fraser Valley along with bobcat and coyote access and firearms restrictions frustrate any would be hunters. Hunting in general improves as you move up into the mountains coming off either side of the Fraser Canyon, along Harrison Lake and on up into the Lillooet Country. In these less populated areas the deer turn from Coastal black tail to mule deer a much larger interior deer than a black tail. If you park and get out and hike you will see deer up the hills and get a chance at a buck or doe. Black bear are abundant in these areas as well as deer.
For the real wilderness hunting, there is wild country lying at the heads of Toba, Jervis and Bute inlets and Phillips Arm, and these areas are not too far from the metropolis of Vancouver. Getting there is another story,
access by boat or plane and not too many places to land a boat except the dock at Toba Inlet.
Jelly --(Sudden Winds) can rip yah from your anchorage so gotta babysit yer boat.

Full of knowledge eh Jelvis! I live in chilliwack and you are right! We have some monster black bears if you know where to look. I recentely went for a scouting hike up near chilliwack lake area. Got into some alpine, hiked for about 7 hours, And saw 8 different bears! One of which was a really pale black almost like a grey. Blacktails to but there a bit harder to find. If someone doesnt mind puttin miles on the boots theres no reason you shouldnt be succesful. Anybody just give me a pm and I'll do my best to point you in the right direction.

Bute--Southgate
This unit includes the east slopes of Bute Inlet and the Southgate River watershed, accessible only by boat or plane. There is a major logging road up the Southgate and it's headwater tributary, the Bishop River both of which rise on the southeast slopes of the Homathko Snowfield. This is mighty glacier country, with some of the worlds most spectacular mountain flying including the Waddington massif in MU 2-15.
Good black bear and goat country, fair deer in lower Southgate valley years ago but not too sure now, grown up, some water fowling and geese hunting around the creek mouths. Better water fowl on the mouths of the Knight and Kingcome Inlet tributaries in MU 1-5 and 1-14.
some roads up the Quatam River from Ramsay Arm and up the South Orford, from Bute Inlet, half way up the east shore. Good goat hunting here, Good grizz check regs for any openings for a grizz up to date.

Bute--Homathko
The Homathko drains the east slopes of it's ice field and south slopes of Waddington ice field.
Huge country for sure
Plenty of logging roads on both banks of the river up about 15 km's then twice that far on the right west side of the Homathko -- good deer and black bear, goat and grouse and a lil water fowling.
Two other short logging roads run west into the mountains, up Mellersh creek 15 km from the head of Bute and up the Moh Creek the same distance from the mouth of Bute.
This unit also includes the upper portions of Phillips and Fredericks arms, more famous for salmon and sea-run trout.
Good goat hunting hot spots are: Phillips Arm and River, Moh Creek, upper end of Bute Inlet on west side.
This is a dangerous boating inlet, little shelter from storms. Keep a crew member on board if the boat is anchored.
Grizzly are present check modern day regulations first on all animals.

People think not much hunting in the Region 2, but that is wrong. Take the Chilliwack Area for example with her dynamic wildlife system with varied hunting area around her. The Chilliwack River Valley up the Vedder River has fair deer hunting, and bear and grouse with some goats thrown into the mix, plus world class steelhead and co-ho fishing in the river you drive in on. Wow! This is a healthy valley up the Chilliwack River.
Elk Mtn by Chilliwack is a beauty of a spot to drive up to, and see deer and grouse. Some rabbit.
MU 2-3 is what we're getting at here. The Chilliwack River Valley road up to and past Chilliwack Lake, hunt behind and back of the no-shooting zones and it's side roads. Some provincial forest camps along the road.
and hunt in the hills south of Jones ( Wahleach ) Lake

Jelvis
09-16-2008, 04:11 PM
Mount Thurston up the Chilliwack Valley is a super place to see for a deer hunter. If you get up here and look and it doesn't make your mouth water, hang up the shootin iron.
Drive up as far as you can for the weather conditions, then start hiking up the road and when you level out look back over your right shoulder at that ridge. Blacktail bo nan zaaaaa. With some snow about a foot or so.
This is deer country.
Check out Mt. Thurston on your map up the Chilliwack River Valley.

Region 2 has Sumas Mtn for bow and shotgun for deer and some excellent habitat to hunt in.
Chilliwack Mtn has deer, check regs and By-laws
Columbia Valley has deer and grouse
Tamihi, Pierce Mt, Ford and mainy more. I like Elk Mountain.
Vedder mt
Many spots close to pavement and hard gravel. Just check Hunting reg's and leh for open area and restrictions
You could be hunting in an hour or two.
Jel .. Region 2 can do -- region 2 is a wonderful region

Yep Jelvis, there's wildlife all over Sumas Mtn.

Tons of Mulies walking around on the roads at night along Sumas mtn. One got schmucked by a car the other night and had to be put down.

After that, 4 more mulies walked out of the yards and sauntered by.

Last June, a 350 -380 pound real solid Blackie was hit by a Ford Focus wagon at 2:00 am on South Parallel road by Whatcom. The bear died, but the Ford Focus was totalled- frame damage and all.

Theres been a few reports of Cougars ovet the years too. Not bad for region 2-4

Sumas mountain? yah.. there most certainly are deer there. They come out of the hills and eat all the flowers from peoples gardens in the summer and they arent to hard to find inthe subdivisions all around that area.

Jel -- Sumas too good to pass -- hey it's close to Van. There's blacktail, check bow and gun regs for the spot you see on your topo, and if it's Crown, a deer's goin down. Gett yer butt out there!

If you drive up Up the Chilliwack River from the Vedder Crossing
There is a multitude of hunting opportunity for avid hunters, goat, bear, blacktail deer, grouse and world class trout and coho, chum and spring.
Look at your rec maps and see how the Chilliwack River system connects and hunt the drainages that head in from Depot Creek far up and Elk Mt area in the south.
All provide hunting satiation and satisfaction for road hunters but especially for hiker type hunting. Quite challenging but very rewarding when you nail a nice four point blacktailed buck. Way more work to see a blacktail then a mule or whitetail.

That river the Vedder, and Chilliwack river is world class fishing second to none. Dark green water with rocks and tree's in it for hiding and resting spots for the fighting steelhead trout and coho salmon this is the finest river in the valley. The boulder hole, the dike below the Vedder bridge and upstream runs that just reak of trophy fishing as well.
I might have to move down to the Vedder if the rents are cheap in them cabins by the Vedder Bridge. What an area for the sports person, man I miss that river. Trout fishing in deep pools and connecting on every cast when the river fishing is opened.
I can't believe we could have fishing and hunting like this in our province, we got blessed by mother nature.
Jel-Vedder river world class fishing right in our province.

Sorry to inform you Jel, but the cabins by the Vedder Crossing have been gone for about 2 or 3 years now. They were being inhabited by squatters, so down they went. You are right about one thing though, we are blessed with fishing and hunting in BC.

You want a nice blacktail deer you have to hunt hard by hiking around with a plan to spot some.
Once you know a spot has deer hanging around because they like that area, you hunt that spot.
You will get a nice buck if you can find this type of a slope coming up from a narrow flat valley.

Took 1/2 day to put some meat in the freezer on the first day out this year. cant complain about reg. 2 anymore

not to mention that to drive 2-3 hrs to better hunting territory means getting up at 3 am and getting home at 11 or12 at night. "ok" once in a while but thats a severe lack of sleep for just a day hunt.

Region mu 2-6
Squamish River

Used to be good goat hunting
Fairly good black bear hunting
Drive up the Squamish beyond Cheekeye to the Elaho, a main tributary.

Has anyone actually seen any decent amount of grouse in Region 2?

Sure. Region 2-6, usually see between five and 10 each day. Almost never from the car, though: they're in the thick stuff, and I either hear them running, catch a bob of the head, or the dog flushes them out.

Enough to get me out every week.

You gotta be sneeky to sneek up on the blacktails in the region 2 rain forest when they're not rutting. Hard hunting. Grouse in region 2? I don't believe it. I did see one grouse in region 2 today although it was on the border of region 3 and I think it was lost.
There's a good population of grouse in reg. 2, if you are willing to put on the hiking boots. Walk along the old logging roads that no vehicles, including atv's travel, especially where there's a healthy berry and willow and alder growth alongside, or poke along small creek beds, if you're looking for willow grouse. Go to the highest logging slash ridges, 1-10 years old, for blue grouse ( you can hear the cocks hooting from a great distance.)

Spent the day in 2-17, off the coquihalla at Shylock. Went to the top and back end. Zilch, nada. No grouse droppings, not a single deer track. Lay of the land looked promising, too bad. Saw a nice 3 point on the side of "0" ave heading out there though.

I don't think you can beat Chilliwack river valley for hunting blacktail deer tho for those wanting to drive as little as possible to an area with big-game and grouse.
The Fraser river banks and hills along the Fraser river around back of Chilliwack Mt and area are full of night life for animals. Evenings and early mornings should still see some out and about.
But like said drive out to the Vedder crossing and pick a direction either Chilliwack Lake or Columbia Valley area.
Chilliwack Lake area can be a good area if you know the key areas. I liked Mt Thurston and Depot creek area. The higher you go and the farther back on some half decent semi-open forest for the Fraser valley hunters.
Go up Mt Thurston to the saddle on top and go right on that ridge and back aways maybe 5oo meters, when there is snow and you will see blacktail bucks in good shape.
Region 2 blacktails are skookum bucks with a healthy girth on those colored tines and heavy mass.
Depot creek wow if you hike you'll see country that will amaze you, grassy hog backs with rock and semi-open forest and you'd think you were in another world. Awesome sight for a coast hunter or any hunter to see for once.
Chilliwack and Harrison some real hunting country. Hunting that would make any hunter want to get out of the truck and hike in. Jel-Region 2---Second to none.

Hey Jell, do you have any more specific info on this? I would like to take a wander up there tomorrow with my son, but would like to be certain I am in the correct area.

Thanks
Jim.

Great that you are sharing the information. But it is largely word for word from the 1984 BC Outdoors Hunting Guide.

I still have a copy
Your waaaaay too kind about the book writing. Use the info for access and some hunting ideas and print off some and take it with you if it's applicable.
Like
MU 2-1
Manning Park

This unit includes both sides of the Hope-Princeton Hwy, that's Hwy 3 from Skagit Bluffs on the west to Placer Creek on the east. It also includes Manning Park (no-shooting) and the Three Brothers Mountain area on it's east. Generally a no hunting section. Jelly-Park.

Surprising you can't immediately recall the book or respond. Especially, when nearly all of your comments are "borrowed" from it.

All I know is Region 2 is a dang good region even if it's a smaller unit.
From Sumas Mtn up the valley we can do some big game hunting for blacktails.
Not bad eh, just east of Abbottsford and lil west of Chilliwack. Talk to me.

Just came back from 2-11: You need 3 things to hunt there:
2 good knees and heart - deer are well off the roads and at about 900 meters elevation during the day: There are lots of deer judging by the amount eating in the farmers fields after dark:
Oh and one more thing you have to be in to starting your hike well before light:

Battered , Bruised, and still taking Advil:
