After 2 years of close calls, my son Shane finally connected on his first deer.
After walking about 15 min from the truck at first light, Shane wanted to drop over the edge of the ridge and see what's what. He had a doe in his sights before our butts had soaked up the morning dew!! After another 15 min of Mexican stand off the doe got fed up and started to move out. Just then Shane spotted a second doe, me as the onlooker had the bino's. Just as soon as he said doe, I said buck. In a heart beat I heard the bolt cycle as he asked "where". I guess they heard the bolt and started to move real fast. He managed to get a shot off moments before they were all gone for good.
The shot was 125 yds and a little over 50' below us. Due to an as yet undiscovered ravine between us, we hiked back to the truck double time and drove for 10 min to get to the road below us. Turns out we were less than a 1/2 click from the spot I got my spring chocolate!!

Bet those first steaks taste pretty darn good! If you can't wait for your Dad to butcher it, just go slice off a piece or two, and throw it in a buttered pan with a little garlic powder/salt/pepper.

Sounds like a tricky shot, shooting downhill and all. Good for you!

Well my dear Son, while your at school learning to be smart like us "Old folks" dear old Dad is having a feast of fresh deer heart. Between me and the dog, I'm not sure there's any left :smile:

Maybe it's time you learned to do more than just shoot critters, I mean you are twelveteen and all!!!

Thanks all for the kind words, I wish more Dads/Moms could experience the feeling I felt and the look I saw, makes all the not so good days disappear.

Now to see if my daughter will get the bug?
