Well this weekend my dad and I went out bow hutning in lytton, but since im a minor I packed a rifle just in case for that "big one". We saw 6 bears a whack of does, a couple spikes, then we ran across this guy hiking, he was rubbing all his velvet off, just making a racket! all I could tell was he was a big four! I was pretty shaky considering this was my second buck ever, and my first was only 5 days ago. I put the crosshairs a little high to compensate for the extra 60 yards (160), I ended up hitting high, but luck was on my side cuz I hit him in the spine, which dropped and killed him instantly. He is a 4x4 with a 1.5 inch tine coming of his left side which technically makes him a 4x5! Second buck ever!

I have pictures but Im not exactely sure how to change the format to make them work, so I would appreciate the help.

Ben

Looking forward ot seeing the pics!

Tip: If your rifle is zero'd at 100, no need to hold high- It will shoot flat enough out to past 200.

ha well the hunting gods must have a differnt hunter to pick on this year, because last year I hunted 24 days and didn't get any!

thanks guys.

Any tips on how to clean the skull out? I cut it right down the middle the long way, almost like a european skull mount. I picked all the gunk and brain out as much could but theres still alot. I burried it in the garden thinking the bugs will clean it out, but how long will that take. And ive heard of boiling it to? any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! (more so by my mom than me!) although I think it looks cool in the garden:-P

Careful leaving it in the garden , I have seen those things dissappear if you have a poor fence and a wandering neighbours dog....

All I do is pull off thehide and pick out the brain and then hang it in the rafters of my garage...The flies and maggots do the rest..Not as pretty as a bleached european mount but close enough.

Good to know, thanks. I think ill go hang it up right now! how long does it ussually take?

Scrape as much meat and crap off as possible, all that should be left is small very thin pieces that won't come free, eyeballs, bottom jaw, brain, cheeks, take it all off. Then submerge the skull in a pot of boiling water on the stove with a few tablespoons of dishwasher detergent for about a half hour. All that remaining stuff will turn into a jelly like substance which you then shave off with your knife. If there are a few spots you still want to get off put it back in the water for another half an hour to soften it back up again. Don't leave it in the water for too long, you could shrink the skull.

I tried that but put it in a Bucket, that is the most disgusting method by far........YUK I threw it out it stunk so bad.

I even tried the cold water detergent submersion and it was disgusting too.

Nice buck for sure!! Back to cleaning the skull - IMO boiling is the fastest/easiest way to do it (there was some instructions given earlier).

The only additional info I would give is to boil the head OUTSIDE with a coleman camping stove or something - if your mom doesn't want the head in the garden, she sure won't want the smell of deer skull throughout the house!!!

Boil and pressure wash that skull, its the easiest and cleanist!

That's a skookum rack on that classic mule deer buck. You did a heck of a hunt on him. You say he was makin lots of noise rubbing on a tree. What did it sound like and what time of the day. What will it measure?
Put it in the hbc contest cuz it's a biggin--Jel=biggin

Alpine Addict
09-08-2008, 06:03 PM
Gross! I was jsut pressure washing out the skull and I got a mouthfull of brain mush.. make sure all the brain is out beofre you pressure wash for all those future people!

Jelvis- yeah, it was around 9:00 in the morning and I jsut heard a terrible racket, wandering if it was a bear on a tree or what, so I stoped and he raised his head out of the shrubs/wood and it looked like spaghetti hanging from him!

Im gunna get him scored this week sometime so Ill let ya'll know

Alpine Addict
09-08-2008, 06:06 PM
how do I enter the hbc contest?!

It will shrink some when it is seasoned it's green right now but enter the hbc contest cuz it's a humdinger.
Jel-once in a lifetime experience.

Alpine Addict
09-09-2008, 05:12 PM
Yeah i forgot to say that was the green score, thanks jelvis.

I was just curios on what it was approx so my friend did it. Think its worth entering B+C?

Jelvis
09-09-2008, 05:47 PM
To enter the British Columbia record book for a mule deer which is typical frame you need a minimum score of 175 inches so you just missed by 10 inches on the gross score which is quite good for just about any mule deer hunter. Most hunters won't get a buck as big as yours they are hard to get but for some reason I think your ears picked up the sound and you knew enough to look. You took good aim too. Congratulations on a fine specimen. Jelly

Spend a bit more time at the range shooting different distances, say 100-300 and you will know were to hold next time.

Congrats!
