Well, not a big stinky White Owl stogey, but maybe a HoneyTime Vanilla Cigarillo.....

3 degrees and clear this morning, went to a different area. Usually see elk in there but lots of whitetails kicking around too..

So I walked in to where I wanted to be in the dark, set up about 35 yards uphill from a major elk trail on a bench in the overgrown cut block..>And waited...and waited...and waited....

About 7:00 I hear a noise to my right and see 2 whitey does coming my way...Perfect, they will be coming down the trail that I am sitting overlooking....All of a sudden they get in a pissin match, swinging at each other with their front hooves and they come running straight at me...They eventually stop about 20 yards away from me behind some Buffalo Berry bushes....I swing my crossbow that way and wait...

Eventually the one walks out broadside, measured it at 23 yards after...Decided, might as well put some meat in the freezer. At the shot, she ran across the cut block in the open for 40 yards (ranged it later)..She stood there with her tail up and head up...I knew I had hit her but she really wasn't showing it...

She stood there for about 10 seconds, then her tail drooped, then her head drooped and then she fell over, and with one kick , it was over..:razz:..The other doe would not leave us alone, was not really scared as I walked up to my doe...

Walked back to the truck, drove in as close as I could (200 yards) and went back in to drag her out..When I got back in the other doe was still there..Dragged my doe to the truck, took some pics, gutted her and loaded her up....

I looked up on the hill, just where I had been sitting..2 point whitey buck standing there...and me with only 1 tag.....

Could not find my arrow on the original search, so went back and scoured the area really good...Finally located it. Of the 3 blades on the mechanical, only 1 had opened. Still was fatal but not what I had expected. I have used these before and usually they make major damage. 3 blades with a 2" cutting path....Not sure if the mechanical failed because it was so close and very fast, or if it did not hit anything solid enough to open the blades....Went between the ribs....

Hit her a little further back than I had hoped, but the arrow went right through the top part of the liver (I was all kinked around, not really in a comfortable shooting position)

Pictures a little bloody, she leaked out a bit more on the way home in the back of the truck...

Now that I know for sure the bow works and I can hit something I am back at the elk tomorrow morning....She should b every good eatin'.....Roasts, cutlets and burger...

Nope, I'm 5 days straight, and zero elk sightings.

We have seen a few whitetails though. I've passed on two different does and a fawn so far, and the other day while I was working in the afternoon, The Wife(tm) passed on a real nice buck (4x4, past his ears, 7-ish inch tines - wow!). I asked her what she was smokin to do that, and she figures we've got all season to get a buck but only a few more days to get an elk (we're not going to bother with 6 point season this year - it's bow season or bust for us).

3 degrees eh? Perfect hunting temp! I always thought the early bow season in the E Koots would be too warm

I would've asked the same question. Maybe she's trying to wait until the buck grows a few more tines

Oh, and nice looking doe, should taste good!

Way to go Rocksteady! That's awesome. :D

What brand of mechanical was that? Very odd that only one blade would open. Was the entrance at any kind of an angle?

Cheers,
4ster

Very similar in style to this. I threw out the packaging so can't guarantee brand...

Angle wise, I would say maybe 10%, went in between 2 ribs, only opened 1 blade, straight thru the liver and then out the other side, taking out another rib with the opened blade..
