my cousin and his three boys, and myself got drawn for 5-02 A moose october 1-15. it was our second choice. i hunt the 5-02 for late spring bear, but have never hunted it in the fall.

scouted on the labor day weekend. scouted gustafsen lake, powerline from 3-31 to the enterprise, snag lake on the tatton road and the area up towards joes lake.

the boys have become real keeners and its been a pleasure to be uncle with them. would love to get a moose with them in about 5 weeks.

any advice for hunting this area? the boys also have doe draws which should not be an issue to fill.

thanks for any advice/counsel you might have.

that accounts for the old moose pellets we found in the aspen shelter belts facing south and west.

we saw a bull on the weekend, smallish, maybe 25-30 inches and he seemed to be moving from one set of swamps to another. lts of browse this year with the rain and all the pine beetle looging shows starting to grow in

when do the moose start to move west into the wintering range?

the 900 rd. would be a good place to startsouth to gutsafsen east rd(1000)north to helena lake, east to the powerline, and west to enterprise/meadow lake rd. this is where i would concentrate. this is the area i see the most moose as it gets later in the season

The biggest rack I ever did see was in 5-2, downtown Williams Lake right on the highway. I offered to buy her a drink at the Laughing Loon but she told me to get lost.

Jelvis,

A gal from work, and her husband, last fall went into Meridian lake area north of Hwy #24 on the Wavey Lake main. It's along 3-39 and 5-01.

They were just fishing, but they both have hunters in their respective families.

They packed their fishing tubes into a small lake north east of Meridian, and halfway through the day saw a huge Bull Moose with a beautiful full rack come out of the bush and take a drink lakeside. They could only take a poor picture with their cell phone. Both described it as excellent "trophy" quality. Both know the difference between a quality Bull and a "spike fork".

In addition, they saw several excellent 4 point Mule bucks as well as a plethora of Black Bears. In fact they had Bears sniffing near their camp every night. Wolves howled in the night as well.

It appears this general area is south of Windy Mtn, which is south of Canim lake- huge country.

My goal is to get up there in October and get another Black, but I sure wouldn't mind focusing the crosshairs on a Wolf as well. So far I don't have one of those on my wall. :-P

Mu 5-4
Hanceville Southwest
Lee's Corner - Taseko Lakes

Lee's Corner is on hwy 20, 57 miles (91km) west of Williams Lake. The Big Creek-Fletcher Lake-Taseko road turns south here, forking 3.5 miles along with left fork to Big Creek and right fork, a main logging road, running down to the Taseko River and Lakes. A network of logging roads gives access to much of this country, which becomes more mountainess as we approach Taseko
(big bucks)Lake.
Good deer and moose hunting in a paradise. Jelly-MU 5-4

Is that all you have for me?:biggrin: I'm heading to Taskeko for Oct 15 leh...heading in on the 12th tho to hunt mulies....

I'd hardly call moose hunting in the Cariboo fair considering that it is all under LEH. It's about time for a moose spike/fork horn opening in Region 5.

Well that's all decided by the Biologist's running the show. In Kamloops we have an excellent numero uno Bioligist at the top and it carries on down to the new field worker's who count and set up testing area's and a meriad of other important fact finding facilities failing far flung fluctuating features forever it seems anyways good luck road hunting. Jelly-and the belly boater's on Brigade. Bye 4 now.

I have a feeling the more generous, if you will call it that, opportunities to harvest moose in region 3 as compared to region 5 may have a side to it that some aren’t aware of. Not sure if it’s factored into the works yet, or if it even will be, but here’s basically the short of what I heard from reliable sources: a solution to the wolf predation on the endangered mountain caribou populations in parts of region 3 would be to increase the moose harvest allotment to the point where the wolves, losing most of one of their prime winter prey, would also diminish in numbers, thus alleviating the pressure on the caribou. To me that is a back handed, inside out solution to a problem that could be dealt with better and more directly, i.e. go after the wolves themselves if their numbers are increasing too much , and leave the prey species as is. But of course that’s not politically correct nowadays. Hopefully numero uno will let common sense prevail, if indeed n.u. has any input into it. Nuff said, don’t want to sound political.

region 5 is poor hunting;
too many wolves (the regional manager is against control)
too many "native hunters";
too many white yahoos driving around with their pu's and atv's, shooting up road signs and throwing alcohol containers on roads and trails.
