We spotted 3 goats on a slide, after a long hike we could see two of the goats from above 500+ yrds we wached them for about an hour and determined that they were billies and we would try to close the distance. Moving to a closer rock pile I ranged it at 330yrds... we conemplated taking the shot but decided we could get closer if we went around the peak and came at them from the other side. We made our way above them to the peak, when we got there we found that there was no way we could cross to the other side because it was strait down! From there we spotted another billy on the backside but he would have had a real longdrop if we would have shot him, from this vantage we were 400yrds from the two goats, just then I looked back to where we had left our packs (at the first spot 500yds) I noticed that they were not on the right noll? I raised my bino to see two hunters getting ready to shoot... I just had time to say to my partner "Dude there's hunters!" BOOM. I swung my rifle up and could see him shooting the back goat! "he hit the back one" I said, "should I take the back one?" I asked. there was some confusion as to what to do! I knew they had hit the rear goat and not the front one. The goats made their way to the rock bluff behind them, we waited and waited and tried to decide what was proper here! While we were contemplating it my partner (camera man) said he would go talk to them and give me the thumbs up if they were ok with us taking the other goat that had walked out onto the bluff (turned out to be the third goat we couldn't see) My camera man was on his way to them and I was watching these guys with my binos, I came to the conclusion it was a guide and his client because one of them was wearing a red vest, it had been about 15min since they shot (felt like forever) they started to get their packs on to go after their goat...TracknTrail had still not made it to them so I made the call...range 383yards hold two mills...breath...calm...squeeeeezzzzz. BOOM goat down! the goat fell about 20ft off the bluff... and rolled...and rolled...and rolled...and still rolling....rolling...he's gona stop....nope... all the way to the bottom of the basin I noticed about 3/4 way down he was missing one horn!!! crap... I walk over to meet up with TT and the two other hunters, we talk a bit and tell them where we last saw their goat and part ways (good guys).
Down the mountain we go, TT starts supper and I hiked up to see if I could find the other horn for pix, I found it where he fell off the bluff. A few pix later we started to debone and cape him out. It was a real haul to climb out of the basin and the fact that it was now dark didn't help...hey whats that? snow...nice... a few hours later and with a little help from the gps we made it back to the truck and decided to head home! 1600mg's of advil between us and I could lift my arms above my shoulders again.
Now I only have to wait to see if someone finds my wallet from the trip home!
