I am ordering a jet boil stove and am looking for comments. I talked to a few guides this fall and they all use it for their sheep hunts. They said it boils water faster than any stove and uses way less fuel. Claim it burns at least half the fuel. Also talked to a bush pilot and he swears by it as well.

Is it as good as they claim? How much fuel do you pack for 2 people for 7 day hunt?

Every backpacking forum that I have read gives it rave reviews. The one knock that I have is that it only uses Jetboil fuel. Those cannisters can be hard to find. When you go to buy them, stock up. I have not personally used one, (I use a Primus), but have spoken with people who converted to them and use 1/3 to 1/2 of the fuel, depending on the weather and air temperature.

Are you going with the PCS (personal size) or the larger GCS?

CAVEAT: Before you get out the tar and feathers, here is just an example. No one is advocating buying from them, just an FYI. There are lots of places to get them.

MSR also has a system like this which seems great for larger groups with the bigger pot.

I just went their website again and it recommends you use their fuel for best efficiency. Looks to me like the run regular fuel by the looks of the threads on the fuel canister.

Can anyone else verify this?

Just checked their site again under FAQ and he it is

"
Can I use Jetboil with other fuel canisters?

Jetboil is compatible with valves made to the EN417 specification, a standard adopted by manufacturers throughout the world. Please note that the product has not been tested with every different type of fuel canister, and we cannot claim safe operation with any canister other than our Jetpower brand of fuel."

I just talked to a guy at Corlanes in Dawson about this stove yesterday. He took it out on a backpack trip last week and was really impressed with it. So far, he has boiled 12 litres of water on one canister. He was also in high elevation with it. The 1 he used boils 2 cups at a time, which is perfect for the mountain house meals. He figured 2 minutes or less per boil. Sounds really good to me and is making me think about getting one.

Before you order one, check out your closest Coast Mtn Sports.
The store in Kamloops had two in stock. The sales girl said the company was bringing the Jetboil into more of the stores.RB

hmmm TRIED jetboil......and went with MSR XGK EXPEDITION very small, extremely well built..and uses every fuel..whitegas,jet fuel, DIESEL...pretty much any fuel source found ANYWHERE..and was just as fast to boil a litre of water.. I think MSR XGK was even slightly faster and yes I timed both..for groups of 2 or 3 XGK shines..and you can use any pot unlike the jet boil..xgk also has a aluminum windscreen included AND a aluminum sheet for a lid..xgk looked much better built..

MSR comes with 2 jets for different fuels..small tuneup kit...

As soon as I can justify buying another stove it will be a Jetboil:cool:.

With my Brunton Raptor cannistor stove, we used less than 450gm of fuel for 12 days of boiling 4 cups of water/per day for two people last year and the year before. That was with a home-made windscreen.

ONe other advantage to changin over to the Mtn House Propacks is that they only require 1 1/2 cups of water each...instead of 2 cups.

I would imagine the Jetboil should be a "chunk" more efficient than that.

I have 4 stoves right now. An MSR that does duel fuel, one Brunton and One Primus. All work all right but wind is the real challenge to keep your fuel consumption down. The jetboil is a tad bigger than my others but I should save in the fuel by talking to most. I talked to jetboil and they said all standard fule cannisters will work but of course they say theirs are more efficient. I orderd one delivered to my dor for $80. If is does not work as good as my others then no big deal but I think it will be the one in my pack this fall.

Whats the cost after crossing the border? Duty and shipping? Is it still less than $110??

$82 was the price converted to Canadian including taxes. It was sent USPS so there will be no brokerage fee. I will have to see if I get stung with duty but on a $80 product duty will be next to nothing. I will still be well under the $110 plus taxes. I am guessing maybe $100-110 at absolute max after everything.

I will let you know the final price once delivered but I know it will be cheaper. I needed to order it anyways as no dealers anywhere close to here.

Can't wait. I want to get some of the small cannisters that fit inside the cup. Can not buy them around here so will have to run the regular canisters this year but will stock up on the small jetboil ones for next year.

I bought a Jetboil 4 years ago off eBay... It uses ANY of the fuel canisters on the market without issues (isopropanol/butane) I've taken it on several trips with me and never had a breakdown of any sort... It's very reliable. I've watched guys mess about with their other stoves, priming, setup etc... and my water is already heating up while they still mess around.

It boils water faster then any other stove I've seen with less hassle and setup... It's light, compact and I bought mine for about $100 (shipping included) Really cold creek water takes about 4-5 minutes to come to complete boil if it's room temperature then it will do it in the advertised 2 minutes.

Seriously, if you're just boiling water for freeze dries, coffee, soups, oatmeal etc... Then JetBoil is the way to go!

You will be very happy with your stove... The smaller fuel canisters are nice because they fit right inside. They will last 4-5 days cooking 2 freeze dry meals a day for 2 guys. The larger ones will last double that. For cool weather try and keep the fuel inside the tent. This year it got down 0/-1 or so and it was harder to start for coffee in the morning... (took like 20 clicks of the piezo as opposed to 1 or 2)

Buddy if mine was on a guided dall hunt this year. He had 3 guides and they had a jet boil. The 3 of them all packed one small cannister. They did not finish the second cannister after 8-9 days. They cooked 2 2-man freeze dried and oatmeal for breakfast. Also had one or 2 nights of coffee or tea.

That is what sold it for me. First of all pure backpack sheep guides were using it and second the fuel consumption was unreal.

I was looking at buying a Jet Boil Stove as well but was unable to find one in time, but was lucky to stop at the Trappers Den in Fort Nelson and found the New MSR Reactor stove. This is pretty much the same stove as the Jet boil but uses radiant heat instead of a open flame and fits tight to the pot so there is 100% heat transfer. I used it on my hunt and loved it.

The stove came in over the weekend. The final price to the door was $78.84 US. So converted was like $87 total.

Can not complain about that price.
