Alison (newhunterette) has posted a couple of pics in the members pic area.....

We finally got away 10:30 ish on Sunday, day before opening season... Needless to say Nick was stoked!......

Heading up the Coq. towards the summit, the weather closed in, the rain started and the temp dropped from a balmy 16C in Hope to a cool 7C. It was just after lunch when we turned off with a very low overcast and temp still dropping..... 50 more kilometers and we reach our destination, the camp we have hunted out of for several years!! Our trusty A frame still stands and only needs a little repair before we tarp...

By now the temp is hovering between 1-2C with a very stiff wind and of cours all types of weather blowing in...rain, sleet hail and snow! Good to be in the high country at the end of August!

With a roaring fire going, we have time (which usually isn't the case!) to sit around with Nicks two "uncles" who came along to join in sharing the experience with Nick and to help me with the heavy stuff that I still can't do! With a lot of laughs and joking, the evening skies darken too fast and off to bed we go.....

We awake to a very cool, -2C, windy but fairly clear morning. A quick breakfast and we are off to one of our favorite slashes only a couple of kms away. Arriving with the rising sun, we are busy glassing, searching for the illusive deer. Our drive in the day before was probably the first time we have gone in without seeing a deer and Nick was taking this as a bad omen.... No spotting anything we start heading through the slash to what we call the end slash.... Part way through, long down below me, I spot a large buck partially hidden in the fire weed! Hitting the brakes, I did what no Dad should ever do!.... "Nick" I yell," get out, there is a moster over here!!!!" Nick bails out, comes around my side and I hear him mutter "Wholey shit!" under his breath as he loads and lines up...... BANG! and the buck is off!...... To make a long story short, after 2 hours of checking, it was a clean miss! Nick is upset as his missed oppertunities last year followed him until just about the last day of the season.....

We decide to head to another favorite road several kms away, Nick sitting beside me upset at his miss and me mentally kicking myself at getting him fired up over a deer that he hadn't seen yet...(yes, it really was that big!!)

Heading up the steep road the another 8-10 year old slash, we are busy talking and keeping our eyes out for deer.... something registers in my brain and I hit the brakes and back up 10 feet. Looking off to my left, here is a nice young buck, laying in the sun at the base of a tree watching us! Not wanting to get Nick too excited (again) I quietly tell him to lean forward and look up...he does and sees it instantly... Jumping out, he loads up and Bang.... time to cut the tag...Finally an easy one a 35 yards!!

By 12:00 we are in camp with the deer skinned, cleaned up and bagged and still a day to kill. We ended up doing a little bow and a little bear hunting...weather stayed clear and cool in Monday, a high of 5C and cooled down to -3C on Tuesday morning....

All being said and done, we saw 14 does, 7 bucks, 7 bear and only 2 grouse!! great trip, great having a son as a hunting partners and great having two good buddies that give up their opening bow season to be with us and to help (read as do everything!) us out!!

Great trip Mike, Nick looked real happy in the pictures. Your story gave Shane a lot of optimism for our trip this weekend.

So did you cape the first one for him? or just a rack mount?

I just spoke to a good friend who just got back from hunting with his sons for youth season - both boys took down a 2 point spiker each so looks like a healthy youth season so far (2 more Aldergrove boys to harvest some tender morsels)

I received permission from Leaseman (Mike) about the other photos I have from his and Nicks trip to ppost them - here they are
enjoy:

^^ That is right... my son is on the right (this is his second buck!) and his two "uncles"...middle gent, another Mike, and I have hunted together for 25+ years.... on the left, Sean, we have hunted for 15+ years....

Nick has been in on maybe 12 deer kills and he loves the learning/cleaning/butchering parts too!! Mike was going to show/help Nick with the way he does it!!

newhunterette
09-04-2008, 12:04 PM
I have more pics of the learning process but I figured not to post the more graphic pics as some people may get offended by it but I thought this one really showed the guidance Nick was getting from his Uncle Sean and Uncle Mike and it is wonderful that in Mike's(Leaseman) recovery from surgery that he has wonderful friends who are willing to help out to make this such a success for Nick

We don't encourage overly gory pictures on here, (especially "gratuitous gore" pics) but if you have pictures that just shows the process of cleaning a deer, especially while instructing kids, by all means post them. We have all been there, done that...

Okay here they are - I was impressed at Nick's enthusiasm - when he called me to tell me he got his buck, he was talking so fast - was adorable (probably not the word he would like me calling him) better yet he was very excited
