Going alpine hunting next week for 5 days in 3:32 to a spot we've never been and are worried about having to hike down for water. On the back roads map book it shows a campsite symbol and in the legend it says (trail/water access only) I would take this to believe that there will be water in that spot?

I'm sure with some exploring we'll get a spot with some water, just easier knowing for sure we have somewhere to go. 3:32 pretty dry this time of year?

Hi

I use that book alot too. Some info has not been updated, certain roads are deactivated or totally washed out.

Also, don't rely on the campgroud symbol as gospel truth.

Usually it can indicate just a forestry campground site. And often the info is old so there's not much of a site left. Barely enough room to park a vehicle and pitch a tent, and no firepit.

Usually I'd rely on a creek symbol for water location and get the filter out or boil some water for drinking.

Good luck:razz:

Yeah I know the back roads map books can be unreliable I just thought that if there was a source of water marked on the map it wouldn't change. We're not looking for a campsite just water, I would rather not set up at a camp site in order to avoid people more.

Hi ElectricDyck,
The symbol "Campsite (trail/water access only)" means that campsite can only be accessed by walking in on a trail or it is located on a river or lake and you must go in by boat or canoe. No road access.

Here is a link to a map site, The Atlas of Canada that will let you zoom in to 1:20000. http://atlas.nrcan.gc.ca/site/english/maps/topo/map
It shows the water bodies quite well. I compared it to my alpine trip in 3:32 and found it is reasonably accurate but not right on in showing water bodies. By combining with several other mapping sites such as google earth and topographic maps you should have a pretty good layout of an area.

One thing to keep in mind is that maps show the route as the crow flies. It does not show additional distance when you go up or down in elevation such as a deep ravine or other depressions.

On my alpine trip I chose my camp to be at a pond which solved my water problems. Here is a picture of my camp in 3:32. It is really nice country. Have a good trip.

Yeah I saw your pics when I searched, looked like a good time! I was up in 3:16 today and there's already fresh snow in the alpine, I'm thinkin 3:32 will be the same, that'll solve our water problems.
