View Full Version : BCRams and SSS's Quest for Dalls'

Back safe and sound but it was not meant to be this year.

We knew we were in for one of the toughest, if not "thee" toughest hunts of our lives. The odds were against us so we knew we just had to keep pushing ourselves to the limits to get into some country which had not been hunted in many, many years(or at least we had hoped).

Everything we had heard about the country was true. This corner of BC is, argueably, one of thee most beautiful, wild and rugged places in the Province.

With mountains so new and rugged, shale and sheep trails don't yet exist.

Country so rugged that even BCRams said to post up any pics that I wanted:tongue:

Routes must be chosen wisely.

Boulders, boulders and more boulders....we now know why this zone is known as "The Rock Pit" or "The Rock Quarry".

We wore the soles and toes off our boots and gave it our best effort.

We did not come home with rams but with memories and pictures to last us our lives......lucky to have hunted such awesome country.

With good company and good weather I would deem our trip as a "successful hunt".

A few pics from our journey............................

A great trip doesn't have to include the bagging of your Ram but it wouldn't hurt it any too, glad to hear you had a good and successful trip.

I suppose I should add my two bits.

Although no rams were taken on this trip, it was a total success and a great trip.

We found sheep (a few) right where we expected to see them, although no mature rams could be found.

The mountains are truely rugged and steep. It makes hunting Stone's sheep a breeze and easy in comparison. Heck, even the Dall mountains in the Yukon are relativly a walk in the park. The Rock and boulder fields don't even begin to justify what we went through. Looking at our boots at the end of the hunt, I can say we really wore the treads, rands and leather off our boots in search of rams and I am already looking to buy another pair.

Hats off to all those who have taken sheep in the past in this region and to those who do in the future. You will have earned your ram unlike any other sheep hunt you may have participated in the past. I'll tell all those who want to hunt Dall's in BC to fly at it (with a little chuckle thrown in), for this is the toughest hunt I have ever completed to date. One really needs to be physically fit and in particular, mentally prepared for this region.

Most importantly, having a good hunting partner who is in the same mindset to work hard and go places where few (if any) try to go in search of Dall rams makes for a very rewarding and successful trip regardless of game taken or not.

Armed with the knowledge that we found sheep, will have us looking forward to returning to that country again in pursuit of Dall rams.

Which side of the highway or area were in in. I know guys who took horses in a few years ago and it did not look like that. They said it was not that bad except the very limited feed and no way to tie up or tether the horses. They had to find big rocks to tie their horses to. I am guessing they were on the opposite side of the highway than you were.

Did you run into other hunters or hear or see a legal dall being taken?

Good effort guy's- any sheep hunter on this site understands that there are times when the opportunity just doesn't come - even when you work your butt off and search high and low, rain or shine, and do everything right. It's one of those weird hunting things. The sheep gods are sure to shine on you next time out. Excellent pictures foresure, thanks for sharing.

As said by many before me great pictures!!!

I have hunted dalls 2 years and have come up empty handed both trips left me wondering what could I have done differently.
I still pour over the maps and google earth for the next time I get drawn hoping I come up with a better formula.
I large part of that hunt and being in country is the mental aspect, looks like you are great partners willing to push each other around that next corner, I think that is what it takes for success, plus a little lady luck.

Trips up there are like no other, those are some memories made!!!!!!!

That boulder field looks like it was fun to cross

Actually, we never took any pics of the worst boulder field that we encoutered. We "danced" across the boulder field in picture 4 of post#3.
The biggest challenge was in the same pic but between the two lakes. It took us over 5 1/2 hours to travel 1.6km:shock:. The boulders were the sizes of cars and houses......and the worst part was that it began to rain while we were only about 1/4 - 1/3 the way through. There was no turning back.

Climbing around huge boulders is bad enough but throw in slippery, huge boulders and the combo can be deadly. Rams did end up falling in the creek and goughed up his shin. Could have been much, much worse.

Its not about always getting something when your on a hunt.

The main thing about a hunt is being out there where you two where ,that is what counts.

The snap shots you put up tell the story ,very nice looking country.

There will be another time that you will get lucky ,but nothing will ever replace the good time you had on this hunt and others to follow over the years to come.

Thanks for the great pic SSS ,BCR.http://www.huntingbc.ca/forum/images/icons/icon14.gif.

The Dall hunt is always so hit and miss. Sounds like you put in the effort and the research. Some years guys go up and get 2 or 3 rams in a group hunt the first few days and other years only 1-2 rams are taken all season by all hunters combined. I person waits so long to get drawn then you are at the mercy of the sheep gods. They are either there or they are not. Weather, pressure from the territory side, pressure from hunters before you...there are so many variables. If it was only closer one cold go back 2 or 3 times if need be.

Way to go guys, it obviously was a great adventure. Memories that will last a lifetime and lots of good pics as well. I once wore a pair of boots out on a ten day sheep hunt, I know how hard one has to work and how rugged the terrain has to be to do that, and I'd do it again in a heartbeat if I could. I'm sure it was worth it even without a ram.

Its a sad day if anyone goes on a sheep hunt expecting to shoot a ram or are very disapointed they did not shoot one.

There are a a good many bunch of guys who have put their time in researching hunting areas, going in and hunting hard to get to know the country, that really appreciate what sheep hunting is all about and what it entails.

When the hunt finally culminates in the harvest of a ram in an area they pick and focuss on, one reaps the rewards of knowing what it takes to get there.

I am glad that your awareness was enhanced by my experience. :) Seriously. I am always leery of posting personal stuff on the 'web, but thought that was something others should see. Years of backpacking obviously made me a little too lackadaisical (sp?) about it!!

I can confirm that the saying about "once burned, twice shy" is totally true when taken literally. Man, am I ever leery around pots of hot liquids! I've been the recipient of many burns in my career, (sometimes you even have to continue holding a tray/pan etc that is burning you, since it is holding important food, and there is nowhere to place it down carefully)

So I am not terrified of a bit of heat...Still...

I was cooking some pasta the other day at home, in shorts, bare feet...

Started to drain pot into the colander, got a wee drop of hot water on my foot, and immediatley sloshed cold water on top of my foot in a panic.

All the time, thinking of 4ster..No, I am not kidding.

I think it was a wake up call for lots of us.

Yes, that pot was MT....rest assured.

Forgot to report that the SPOT system worked excellent. We hit the HELP button for pick up one day ahead of schedule and voila! That plane was there 6 hrs later(I wanted to make it home for my son's B-Day on the 12th)

Here's a few more pics since it's not often the BCR gives me the okay to post pics like this. I have a couple of real gems from last year that didn't make the cut!!

There's certainly no disputing what geological force made this valley.
Looks like one could easilly cross that stream but we had a biatch of a time!! Just goes to show how big that country really is! Very deceiving!

Now you've got me worried. ;) :p

Not sure what my exact plans are yet, but I'll definitely drop by. The buddy I mentioned to you won't be making it out this year after all. I will likely wait til the first to get camp set up with Leslie, so I might come see you guys on the weekend. I won't be straying too far from the beaten path, but have one spot in mind for a tree-stand for quick morning hunts.

Sorry to all for the Hi-jack!

I was talking to my hunting partner in Vic last night ,he told me that Ken Jamieson is gone off sheep hunting by himself.

Ken is one hard nose hunter and I wish him well ,he never stops when there is a mountain between him and the next.

I wish him well good luck Ken J http://www.huntingbc.ca/forum/images/icons/icon14.gif.

Best of luck to Ken!
18 days solo is certainly more than I could do.

We've got a friend over there for his second solo trip of the season right now..trying to complete his BC Slam. He said he would be keeping an eye out for Ken(as he lurks in the shadows of this site).
He's a veteran sheep hunter and was armed with some "top notch" information but was dissappointed in the numbers of sheep seen in his first 10 day effort. After that he's heading down to the Island for his archery Roosie elk draw.....which if can connect with both the sheep and the roosie elk he would have taken every big game animal this province has to offer.
I don't know of any one else that has done that. That would be quite the accomplishment!!

Hopefully they will both connect on their white sheep!!

OK boys why dont you tell the truth, you guys went in by horses. I have seen 4 differnt water bottles in the pictures including a stainless steel one. No die hard back packers are going to pack 4 water bottles let alone a SS one. Good job of leaving the horses out of the pics.:-P

I stated earlier that they hunted by quad. I didn't want to say anything, but SSS spent a whole week coming by my place for instructions on how to hunt by quad. I finally got tired of his pestering and told him "if in doubt, pin it!".

I'm wondering how that 12V heated travel mug worked? Maybe in the "hunting gear" thread they could do a review on it.

Those same guys flew into similar country as us but couldn't handle it and called for pick up after only a couple days and the pilot told them where to go off the highway. Pretty lucky all told with the end result. The pilot did his darndest to convince us to go there first (where they took the rams) but there was another party in there too (and they also quit the country after a few days) and so we had decided we didn't want to bump into other hunters and we had some pretty good info. and did see sheep but just no mature ones.
