Figured we'd celebrate BC's 150th Birthday by packin' into the backcountry for the weekend. We backpacked in 7 kms to a high elevation lake to do some campin' and fishin'. Was a fun weekend with the family.

One of the beat up old canoes that was in at the lake. Pretty much had to come to shore every 45 mins to drain it out.

Glen,
Yup, we got the Sat evening rains. It pretty much cleared up over night and was rather cold come morning. Was happy I brought the stove for the tent. Warms things up rather quickly. I wanted to break it in and see how it packed. Overall, I am really happy with how easily it fits in the pack.

Srupp,
The lake has some old canoes left there for everyone to use. There was another party of hikers there when we got there, so we got the worst of the canoes. The stove on the other hand is a lightweight backpackin stove made by Kifaru. Can't remember the exact poundage, but 3 lbs seems to come to mind.

Killman,
His name is Timber. He's a Majestic bloodhood pup that I got off of Houndogger. I think he's just over 4 months old now.

Been too busy F**kin up my kids to really focus on me and my scouting. While others sit and bitch and moan about how bad things are in this province, I'd rather show my kids how F**KIN AWESOME this province really is. The time of focusin on my hunting interests are pretty much gone. Now I'm focusing on the kids. Only have them for a short time. Don't want to miss out on a couple great hunting partners. Some on this site just don't get that.

You know a guy once told me that you'll never shoot big bucks if you don't scout:razz: I guess the fact that you work in the bush kinda negates that little tidbit of info eh;) I got a few years before my little guy gets F**ked up on Nature, he's just learned how to walk on grass let alone hike alpine ridges. Can't wait for the day when I can sit him behind the ol spotter and show him his buck. Or the one he's going to help Dad pack out:lol:

No secret here. First time I'd actually been in there. We hiked into the first lake of the Steven's Lakes chain in Wells Gray. My daughter's fish was all that we caught all weekend. I'm not much of a fishermen, so I don't know if I just didn't have the right lures or what. Lots jumping but seemed what ever we threw out there, they would nudge and then let be. Still had fun though.

I pretty much scout all year being that I work in the bush. And even though I haven't put much serious time in locating some big high country bucks this year, I have put the time in in years past so I have a good idea where we'll be hunting come Sept. ;)

awesome Dana! being in Kamloops, Wells Gray isn't to far away for me to get to. as for fishing...I'm not much of a fisherman either, but perhaps what you were throwing out there was foreign to the fish, so they didn't recognize it as prey to hit.

btw, what bush gun did you bring?

hey, talking with my dad about this hike (as kids we'd hike Trophy almost every summer) he's thinking these are somewhere around Battle? what area did you access to start your hike up?

dana
08-07-2008, 04:27 PM
Mr. Friendly,
The Stevens Lakes are on the backside of Battle. Access is from the backend of Raft/Ritchie FSR which comes off of Rd 9 (Raft River FSR). The road access ain't pretty. Grown in with alder pretty heavy and there are some washouts to deal with.
As for a bushgun, it is illegal to discharge a firearm within 3-45 so I just packed the bear spray instead. Had fresh grizzly diggings on the hike out. The hound was keen, but I wasn't. ;)

hey dana, thanks. so my dad is probably thinking the right spot. he was thinking of a 7 hour hike to get the Steven's chain...could be old memory flubbing up. and I put the rolled eyed emoticon cause I was pretty sure you couldn't carry anything there!

did you guys eat that trout or throw it back? caught from the canoe or from the shore?

dana
08-07-2008, 04:50 PM
Jesse caught that trout right from shore. We had it for dinner that night. Was very very tastey.

The trail we took was a 7km trail that lead to the first lake. There is another trail that starts near Skeeter Lake (also off of Raft Richie) which is much longer and goes to the second lake. The Backroads Mapbook lists that trail as very difficult to follow with expert map and compass work needed. Maybe that is the trail your dad is thinkin of. The way I understand, there is also a loop trail that comes along the backside of the lakes and joins up with the Battle Mtn trail network. That would be a fun hike if a person had some time to do it. Get dropped off on the Raft Ritchie side and come out at the base of Battle on the main Park Road side.

I'm all ears:razz:

I've found a good non-typical Whitetail hanging around with a bunch of mulies in an alpine draw and he might just meet his maker if some bigger mulies don't show up to distract me.
