Very nice pics. I am totally jealous (as it will be a while before I can do that again!).

Was it a solo trip this weekend?

Cheers,
4ster

Frenchbar,
No monster muleys this trip. I tried to pull one out of the hat, but no such luck. Just saw 3 small dinks and a bull moose.

SSSSter,
Just a 1 night solo coyote trip.

Brambles,
I never used to carry a pillow backpackin', but as I get older the hard ground seems to get harder. The whole family got those Thermarest backpackin pillows. Choices were camo or flowers. I went with the camo. ;)

I guess I don't notice it as much being I'm 100 lbs heavier than you are, more cushion around the bones:shock: Well maybe not quite a 100 but probably not far off. I just put my fleece jacket in my sleeping bag stuff sack and I got a pillow and for the most part its warm when I wake up.

Hey I'd pick camo over flowers too, no question.

Are the bucks staying out much during the day or are they bedding before the sun comes up?

Bucks only moved between 5:00-6:00 am. The bull was out the first. Never saw movement after 6. Granted a huge system came in around 9 and I got fogged out and absolutely drenched. Didn't see a damn thing for the evening scout. The bugs were pretty vicious though all the way till dark. I've found the bucks normally don't move away from their beds until the wind picks up and blows the bugs away.

Last time you posted photo's you said you wore raingear the whole weekend, and I said it was hotter than hell in the WK. Well I jinxed myself cause that wednesday I had a taste of your weather, dumped rain on us for 10 hours and was fogged in something miserable. The bugs were even out in the rain trying to get a free meal to make matters worse.

I'm Going out on Aug 3rd to, (using some of Mike Eastman's annoying catchphrases) "coyote out", "glass with the grain of the terrain", you know "The Eastman Way" geez GAG me with a SPOON:rolleyes:....(thats my little Rant)

Anyways
Nice pictures. Beautiful Owl, tent looks roomie, those Dragonfly's ROCK, just a tad NOISY

LOL! We had the longest heat spell of the summer last week. A total of 6 days hovering around 30 degrees. That all ended yesterday. The lightning show last night was pretty amazing. The temps dropped drastically last night. Was 4 degrees at 4:30 this morn.
I find I use Eastmanisms all the time. But I'll be damned if I ever use the word 'tangs' instead of tines.:p

I certainly love the Dragonfly. I notice I yell alot when it is on, just so the person I'm talking to can hear me. ;) I'm impressed with how fast I can boil water.

"Eastmanism's" I like that one, forgot about "tangs" sure do like them tangs...

I can put up with most of his Phrases but when they say "Hunting...... the Eastman Way" I want to climb through the T.V. and strangle them.

The DragonFly is actually pretty decent on fuel too for its size, I boiled lots of water, panfried a bunch of uncle bens rice packets and a sausages for some dinners on a 5 day sheep hunt a couple years ago for two guys and only burn't 1.5L of fuel.

The dragonfly is going to stay home cause I'm testing out a couple other stoves this year.

Very cool pics. I liked the one of the clouds rolling over the ridge!
Off topic but is that shelter a Kifaru?

dana

Avalanche,
Yup, that is a 6 man Kifaru Tipi. Weighs in at 6 lbs 3oz. A little overkill for a one nighter, but since I got it this spring, I want to use it as much as I can. Makes a great family tent. Can't wait to use it with the stove while hunting highcountry muleys and goats this Sept. Our next family backpack trip is next weekend. We'll see how the weather is, if this wet trend is gonna stay, I may just pack the stove to keep dry.

Have you had a chance to use in the Kifaru in heavy rain yet? The thing that holds me back from buying a kifaru or similar tent is I immagine heavy rain just pouding under and into the floorless tent under heavy rain.

Great photos, especially the owl.
Yeah the dragonfly sounds like an F-14 but I think its a great stove too.

Ryanb,
The first time I used it was in heavy rain, but I had it up on a sandy beach. Had no issue with water rushing in under the sides. If I have heavy rain in the forcast, I will try to find an elevated site to pitch it and I will ditch around it to keep the water flowing in the right dirrection. I have done this for wall tents with no floor and haven't had any issue. When it comes to any tent, one wants to be careful where you pitch it. Low holes are not ideal. ;) I learned that leason very early in my life. I recall my brother and I pitching our pup tent in a depression somewhere up the Alaska Highway one summer when we were kids. Had a river running threw the tent come morning. When it comes to these Kifaru's, they are pretty damn bomb proof. They have been tested under pretty much any and every extreme condition you can throw at them. Even on Everest.

Speaking of the owl, is that a Boreal Owl?

I am thinking of the 8-man kifaru for late season mule deer. I guess in a perfect world I'd get a 6 man for sheep hunting, might be quite nice.

It might even eliminate the need for a tarp (I packa sil tarp) for cooking/hanging out under.

Dirty,
I believe it is a juvenile northern saw-whet.
