The current status of the Fraser River sockeye return provides for recreational
sockeye retention opportunities in most Southern B.C. marine waters.

Effective 00:01 hrs Saturday, July 26 until further notice, in those waters
open to salmon fishing in the following Areas, the daily limit for
recreationally caught sockeye is four (4) per day:

- Area 12 - Subareas 12-1 to 12-4 and Area 13(Johnstone Strait) Note: Area 11,
111 and portions of Area 12 above Lewis Point will remain closed to sockeye
retention in order to protect returning Nimpkish River sockeye. It is
anticipated that sockeye retention above Lewis Point could be permitted
starting near the end of July and will be confirmed by fishery notice;
- Areas 14, 15,17, 18 and 19 (Georgia Strait) Note; Area 16 will remain closed
to sockeye retention in order to protect returning Sakinaw Lake sockeye. It is
anticipated that sockeye retention in Subareas 16-19 to 16-21 (Sabine Channel)
could be permitted starting near the beginning of August and will be confirmed
by fishery notice;
- Area 20 (Juan de Fuca Strait);
- Areas 21, 24 to 27, 121 and 123 to 127 (West Coast of Vancouver Island) Note
that Area 23 remains closed to the retention of sockeye;
- Area 28 (Howe Sound, Burrard Inlet and Indian Arm);
- Area 29 - (includes the tidal waters of the Fraser River downstream from the
CPR Bridge at Mission, B.C. excluding Subarea 29-8 (Boundary Bay)

Sockeye retention is not permitted in the following areas:

- In order to protect Nimpkish River sockeye, it is anticipated that retention
of sockeye salmon in the waters of Johnstone Strait above Lewis Point, Queen
Charlotte Strait and Queen Charlotte Sound, (Areas 11, 111 and Subareas 12-5 to
12-48) is not permitted but may commence in late July, date will be confirmed
by fishery notice;
- Area 16 - remains closed to sockeye retention in order to protect Sakinaw
Lake sockeye. It is anticipated that Subareas 16-19 to 21 (Sabine Channel)
could open to sockeye retention in early August and will be confirmed by
fishery notice;
- In Nitinat Lake (Area 22).
- In Area 23 (Barkley Sound and Alberni Inlet) due to a low return of Somass
sockeye;
- In Subarea 29-8 (Boundary Bay);

Notes:

Barbless hooks are required when fishing for salmon in tidal and non-tidal
waters of British Columbia. This includes all species of fish in the Fraser
River.

Anglers are requested to release any hatchery marked sockeye. These fish are
hatchery raised sockeye and part of a recovery program designed to increase the
numbers of Cultus Lake sockeye.

The term "hatchery marked" means a fish that has a healed scar in place of the
adipose fin.

Sport anglers are encouraged to participate in the voluntary Salmon Sport Head
Recovery program by labelling and submitting heads from adipose fin-clipped
chinook and coho salmon. Recovery of coded-wire tags provides critical
information for coast-wide stock assessment. Contact the Salmon Sport Head
Recovery Program at (866) 483-9994 for further information.

Rockfish Conservation Areas that are currently in effect and are closed to all
fin fishing. Descriptions of these closures, and other recreational fishing
information, can be found on the Internet at:

www.pac.dfo-mpo.gc.ca/recfish

Did you witness suspicious fishing activity or a violation? If so, please call
the Fisheries and Ocean Canada 24-hour toll free Observe, Record, Report line
at (800) 465-4336.

For the 24 hour recorded opening and closure line, call toll free at

I know this thread will turn into a mudslinging contest but I'll ask anyways.
Which is more ethical??Snagging or purchaseing the fish from a native for 8 bucks a peice.Flossing aint sport fishing it simply a way to put fish in the cooler.I'd rather give a native 8 bucks a fish and save my self gas,time,sanity and the chance of getting stabbed.

Comments???LOL

I was up in Hope near haig... we got out at 4:30 and it was fine till about 8ish it was getting busy so I left for work. Not as gong showy as I expected. Fishing was good not great. It was just so nice to get out fishing on such an awesome day, catching the best/biggest sockeye I've ever caught was a bonus! Come on down from the 'loops and give her a go.

You didn't catch it, you snagged it. Don't act like there was a measure of skill involved.

Who cares if he "snagged" a fish or not. If it was in the mouth it was legal.

1) Bottom bouncing is a legal method of fishing and sockeye are open for retention.
2) At least he is not at home slagging people on the net because he thinks he is the internet ethics police. He is out fishing. Try out and try trolling for something else ARGR you BEAK.

3) Huey is having fresh Sockeye for dinner!

bbing is not fishing??? Cmon people, when guys use nets its still fishing, if you somehow get a fish its fishing IMO. Flossing is legal so anyone who bashes anyone for doing it is an idiot IMO. I sure dont give a rats ass if the salmon was hungry or not, if I hook em in the mouth, get to fight em in the river, reel em in and bonk em, thats fun and fish in the freezer, yummy! Anyone know how long it will be open for??? Id like to come down to hope next weekend with the river boat and floss up a cooler of socks! :p

Supposed to be a 10 day opening, but the panel reviews next thursday I believe. It is tough to say if it will stay open 10 days or close early/be extended. Fishing has been spotty according to multiple people I have talked to. However, there is the exceptions of some limiting out quite easily. Natives had an opening yesterday, and that will kick the snot out of things for 1-1.5 days. Apparently the commercials might be getting a crack at things too. That would be good because then I could buy some Sockeye off a buddy of mine.

Mark,

Sorry, come on down from Kelowna not the 'loops..... I hear that they will most likely go beyond the norm of 7 days possibly even 14, so you should be alright for the weekend!
If you need a little more weight in that river boat of yours I think I might know of a few places to look!! ;) By now I'm completely green with envy after staring at about a million beautiful river boats this weekend! Someday I hope, someday!

caught 2 yesterday just up past sumas cannal, 1 at around 8lbs other in that 12 lb range hugest slab of sockeye iv ever played with. very silver clean and bright eyed fish . someone was wondering where to launch, try barrowtown pump station, sumas canal , its very busy but never been broken into and people are generally freindly there.
