Antler measurement ??

As much as I like looking at racks, I know BO DIDDLY about scoring them, so I need to ask the pros.

I have a co-worker friend who's hubby scored a big buck last fall. Apparently it had a 26 1/4" spread, I gather that to be at the tips? In any event, last night he gets it back from the taxi shop and is PO'd that the spread in now only 22 1/4"

Is it normal to loose that much due to skull shrinkage?

probably measured greatest spread @ 26 1/4" , and the 22 1/4" is the inside spread which is the measurement that goes towards the score (greatest spread doesnt go towards score)

He states that his rifle doesn't fit the same as it did in the field. He's miffed. To me it's about the memory of the trip not the tape measure!! To each his own.

I think he was a little excited when he got the buck and maybe mis read the tape ;) All skulls shrink some but that is a little extream. Then again They always look bigger in your head while you wait for the taxi to finnish!

I'm sure that the measurement is taken from the widest part of the inside spread.

Sounds like you had two differnt locations measured.

Probably the outside spread was his measurement, and the scorable inside spread was the second measurement. Spreads won't shrink 4 inches.

The only way I can see this happening is if the skull plate was broken then not set correctly.
Or the dude doesn't know what is what.

my bear shrank over a 2 feet at the taxidermist!!! Or maybe my stories were a little far fetched. The more I told people about it, the bigger I remember it was!
