Just got back from helping a buddy get his grizz down, what a awsome bear.........
We saw alot of bears in the last week ,despite the limited access we did have ,but also I think it condensed them more to a couple areas.. So here it is I am playing eagle eye with the spotting scope from across the valley and put them on 4 different grizz in 4 days ,2 were on a slide at the same time [not sow and cub either] but had a couple of failed attempts with the wind changing directions on them and some nasty slides to climb and nagotiate .
After getting rained and fogged out one morning we left when the storm broke and instanly the eagle {me} spotted a grizz and the boys were on it but it was on a mission some where else and they never did see him this was at 10 00 am ,watching with the bino's and spotting scope he comes out again at 3 00 pm and the boys go after him but get busted by a keen sense of smell on the grizzleys part, oh well back behind the bino's again watching black bears coming and going into the slides and all other critters around I look over onto another slide and there he is a beautiful color phase grizz ,on the radio again to the boys to hurry up and move on this one its 6 00 pm now, and they have a 1 hour hike to him at least .
As I tell him the grizzleys position they climb within 115 yards of it,he was digging up roots on the slide,my buddy sets his pack on a snow drift and then settles his brand new custom lightweight 280 AI on the pack he now has a rock solid rest and waits for a broadside shot the bear turns and he slips a 140 gr tsx through the bears ribs and sends him flying for cover [as I watch all of this through the spottting scope} the bush is thick and my buddy could not see the bear anymore because of the low light and shadows so we decided to back out and come back in the morning,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
The next day was full of anticipation to retrieve the downed grizz, with pack boards on ,3 of us went up the slide that morning and found the grizz piled up not any more than 15 yards from where he shot it,that tsx blew right through him taking out many vitals on the quartering away shot he made ,but the bear was covered by alot of alder and stumps and such that made it impossible to see it unless you were only a few yards away, the hand shakes went around and the skinning and pictures were done .
What a great feeling to get a grizz ,we also took 3 blacks for sausage, 5 foot meat bears all were boars also ....
