What I thought to be two whitetails (doe and last years fawn) turns out the fawn that has the characteistics of a mulie and a whitetail. I know hybrids are rare. He has the head/ears/colour of a whitetail but his body resembles a mulie. His tail is long and has a very dark stipe on the outside while his mother is typical whiteatil. Also when he flashes his "flag" is only stands half mast and is very dark on the underside.

I have done some research and the experts claim it is very rare for the fawns to survive.

He is also starting to sprout antlers (small knobs for now) and he is pretty small compared in size to other mulie fawns of last year. I will post pictures of them when I get the chance.

You can have colour variations of white-tail 'tails' just like you can have different antler configurations.

over the past 10 years, I have seen two hybrid fawns.
one mule deer doe running away, tail flat, fawn white flag up,
the other incident feeding with fawn also displaying white tail.

I have seen a couple hybrids in Sask. A few years back. Some people I know are into elk farming and they had a couple whitetail/mulie things in the pens with the elk. I did not have a camera with me at the time but it seems pretty common knowledge out there to see em all the time

Thats because a big ol whitey buck will put the hurt on a mulie buck and have his way with the doe .

Only if the muley buck is small...you should read some of Val Geist's stuff on the interactions of whitetail and muley populations. A mature whitey buck might dominate an immature muley buck, but a mature muley buck will usually dominate any size of whitey buck. Whitetail does will tend to just run away from muley bucks that are bugging them, the muley won't be able to keep up and will have a slim chance of breeding with her. A mature whitey buck will have no problem keeping up to a muley doe, and will have a better chance of breeding with her. In a mixed population, with lots of hunting pressure, big muley bucks are shot off at a higher rate than big whitey bucks, as a result the remaining big whitey bucks stand a better chance of breeding with muley does without a big muley buck coming along and giving them the boot. Hence, the muley does will more often get pregnant with a "hybrid", which has a higher chance of being aborted, or not living to reproduce. The whitetail does will usually have pure offspring.

At least, that's how the theory goes...I don't know if they know for sure, but Val Geist surely knows a lot more about deer than I do, so I tend to believe what he says.

i think it was the same article that stated that the whitetail will be at lower altitides early in the rut and will have an earlier shot at receptive does. but the article says that 98% of suspected hybrids are an error from the hunter.
