The long winter has made shed hunting pretty slow so far. Im sitting at 37 sheds on the year whereas normally i should be approaching 100 by now! The snow has also kept me from working so far so with all that free time i decided to pound the hills the last couple days. Yesterday i hit some familiar territory and after passing by numerous good sized rubs i knew there had to be some good bucks in there!

By the end of the day i had managed to pull out 4 sheds. One of the sheds was off a familiar buck to myself. This particular buck wintered with my 2004 182" muley, my brother found a shed off each buck only feet apart. The side i picked up yesterday was 5 years old and was only feet from where i found the matching side in june of 2003  (dont know how i missed it!).

Earlier in the day i managed to find a really nice heavy 5 point shed off a buck i have never seen before. This shed is also from last year, im hoping i can find this years set to see how much he grows!

Today i had a late start and didnt make it out until after 1 pm. I knew exactly where i wanted to head so i shed hunted my way thru thick spruce and knee deep snow and picked up 2 old sheds on my way over. Finally i made it to the little knoll that wintering bucks in the area seem to call home. I climbed up to the top and there it was a good 4 point shed with 3 1" stickers on the base making it a 7 point. I turned around and noticed the match in a juniper bush behind me. I could see something weird was going on with that shed but could tell exactly what till i pulled it out of the juniper...Turns out this buck is the same one as the buck i picked up the 5 year old shed from yesterday. These sheds are from last year as well and this buck must be approaching 8-9 years old! We have 7 sheds off him now!!! :-D

Some nice tine there Matt! Love that juniper bush shed! Awesome charactor! The freshies have been few and far between here also, I think only about 1 in 5 have been fresh for me this year. Higher ground I think!

Matt may have beat me this year, but I have a whole pile of monster sheds from previous years that he'll never catch up too. I think my problem this year is I haven't gone out sheddin with Matt. In the past whenever he has gone shed hunting with me, he has found jack$hit and I load up on monster tine.

Matt I like it, your good at finding sheds and nice area and some non-typical tiners I guess that area is good I noticed no back-ground in the pictures lol but nice buck habitat. Jel-n.t.-right?

MattB

I dont think anyone would recognize any background if i posted some. This buck is OLD, and there are other old bucks in there just like him! No one hunts this area

I like the color of the ground with its yellow grass and rock and the old brown stumps from 50 years ago and of course the pictures where the shed was found laying. Good photos Matt. Jelvismulecountryridgesandbluffs.

Yup, pretty typical of any fir stand around kamloops eh Jel? Did you make it out shed hunting this spring?

Jelvis

I didn't even get out yet. I find most of my sheds when I'm hunting in the fall and I carry only a big one to a spot and hope to get them on the way out when I do find a narley one, but sometimes directions change. I will get out even if I have to walk up across the South face of Mt Wheeler from Ord and cut across to Tranquille soon. Good buck country on that rocky face with spaced trees. Jel

Yea, that is some good country in there. I was up just below the greenstone tower today. Surprised me the amount of wintering deer sign in that patchy thick fir up there! I figured they'd head a little lower.

Thats a good observation about Greenstone another muley hunter in Kamloops says the same, big bucks up high in the deep snow late season for some reason around Greeny. I like that area too where cherry starts. I found some keepers there. So much mule deer habitat in the area. Try barnes is my goal all the way from the gardens to above Pennie Lake so many sheds so hard to cover it all bro. Just get out anywhere around and look is fun.Jelpennielake

Yea, ive hunted pennie lake before and found some nasty chalky old non-typical horns above the lake. Thats definetely some good late season hunting in there! I want to figure out where the HVC mine bucks go for the winter

If you don't mind sneaking over the odd cattle fence on a huge range with big drops try the bottom of Carabine and sabistan in the sage brush for sheds I saw some taken out of there big and thick, but like said so many spots to find the big tine. We could go on until we would be thin by then. I like finding the huge white ones that have been bleached by the sun for a year or two. Of course the brownies too. Lots of fun tho, Jeldropoffseverywhere

Ive never found a fresh shed out in the sage....???

Jelvis

I found some in the sage at k4 up behind Batchalor I walk the fences and sometimes find some on hills there, just north of the telus tower, they come in their by the herds in March when the snow gets deeper. I found one nice four point shed right on the fence too. Opax is good Jelthereeverywherearoundthebushhere.
